Here is the bottom line.  The german shepherd is a working dog.  There are no showline dogs working in police or military.  Therefore the showlines are not really german shepherds. They are an embarrassement, breed only for money.  Now the showline people will cry no I breed to improve the breed not for money. I say bullshit to that.  The german shepherd is a working dog and none of what they produce wil EVER work.

I think this is really good thread. It is really important to GSD. I am writing this just to bump it to the top.

This is a very good thread. I just don't understand what the German SL people are thinking. My last dog was a German SL dog, born in 1993 and he does not look like the SL dogs of today. When he died I seriously thought about finding another dog with his lines and when I saw what some of the dogs looked liked (such as the link Uberland posted) I was shocked. So sad....

As a kid I loved the GSD and my 1st dog was a beagle GSD mix(not exactly what I was expecting at the time). As I got older and watched dogs shows as much as I could just to see different breeds. I grew to dislike the over-angulations and due to poor temperments of some I came across I moved away from admiring the breed. My 9 year old daughter fell in love with the breed and with limited research I decided to get one. I didnt want nor could I afford the high price of some pups and wanted a well bred dog. I lucked out and was referred to someone that had pups from a Am. showline female, but the wasnt. The breeder wasnt a fan

the breeder wasnt a fan of the showline looks and used his male to assist part-time on his ranch. Although my female has alot of Am. showline her traits that i enjoy come from her father. But I dont know what kind of GSD I would purchased in the future. This is my females sire and I think he looks like the GSD that I wanted as a child.

A question would the human race like to look like the humans from years ago - small, ugly bent legged people or are you happier with today's race;  the shape of at least;  everyything moves forward and the dogs of yesteryear were absolutely unsound in both mind and body.  They were so frightened of their own shadows judges used to say poor we thing is cold and it was most unusual to see a dog come and go correctly so do not let the trouble makers influence anyone they know not what they talk about.  Working dogs their tempements are mostly neurotic and not good companiion, pets or childrens dogs, certainly not family dogs.  Our dogs all do a degree of work still although we have given up competitiive Sch having taken a dog to Sch H 3 and trained others to Sch 1 and Sch 2.  We still love working our dogs and do have control over them and they like working and we will continue as a natural consequence to have our dogs bidable, controllable and friendly.  The one element of over agggression in working dogs is one thing that can kill the breed quicker than anything.  As this is my opinion I will not be answering anyone  as it is just that an opinion gathered over 40 years at  the top levelof both competitive fields.  Incidentially a working dog, is a police dog, sheep herding, sniffer dog etc,, not one that solely competes in competition.  Another piece of info for all who are interested or, we did schutzhund in the 1970s in the UK and brought in German Judges with no complaint from the League; KC or anyone;  it was only when people labelled working as biting dogs that the trouble started;  there is more than this to it.  enough said.
