I think duke has covered some very important points. I would add that it is very different for someone doing breeding, whether line, type or whatever, who actually has knowledge of the dogs behind the breeding.

For the person who only knows here is a famous dog in the pedigree, let's breed on him, it is absolutely a crap shoot and for the serious person, it may be a few generations before they truly know what they have wrought.

A breeding that close would be like breeding 1/2 siblings or closer, which is more of an inbreeding, and probably should be done seldom, and only by folks who are very experienced with the dogs and bloodlines involved.  Like any trait, breeding close relatives to each other will entrench those traits stronger, making it more probable to show up in the litter to come, and more likely to be passed on to the next generation.  Great if it's a trait that you WANT, not so great if it's something you didn't plan on, and don't desire. There is no way to sort out the genes and get only the good ones.  I think that's what is meant when folks say "it's a crapshoot"  In many ways they're right, but you can increase your odds by loading the dice on the side you wish to get.

If the parents/grandparents of the litter proposed aren't of a certain quality, and again descended from dogs who have something desirable to bring to the table, they the answer's a very emphatic Don't go there...  If perhaps you're breeding on or around a dog who had limited breedings, but was a consistent producer than it's a different issue, and to fix what ever traits that dog had that you admire it's an acceptable, or even preferred method.  Even so you need to look at what negative issues are there very closely.

I've seen pedigrees on the database which have no diversity in the 3rd or 4th generation. Few dogs can survive such tight breeding. In the US  GV. Lance of Fran-jo (ROM) was so popular that within a few years it was very very difficult to find a pedigree that didn't carry him, usually multiple times. (Yeah, I'm showing my age there... LOL)

The one poster said it well any breeding can be a crap shoot, that said you can stack the odds in your favor, for example if you put 2 top showdog lines together compared with 2 top working dogs together what breeding is most likey to produce nice working temperment, the answer of coarse the working lines, but is it 100 percent no,I,ve seen over and over nice working dogs matched up and on paper you think these 2 have to produce something fantastic but in many cases it just simply does not happen, so its true all we can do is put the odds in favor of the desired results,as far as working lines go,one is going to improve chances of comming out with nice working temperment if you breed on working lines of known and proven linebred working dogs, statistics show most of the top workers are on linebreedings, more rare is top dogs that were produced outcrossed, though of coarse it has and does happen, some 2-3,3-2,3-3,3-4 linebreedings can be extremely desirable if the correct dogs are matched up by a skilled breeder.

Lot's of good information here but I understood the question to be whether or not the line breeding descibed, irrespective of the dogs involved, was acceptable and I stand by my original answer; yes, it is.

Thanks too all that have provided some very good info on linebreeding. This line breeding is a 3-3, 4-4, 5-5. Very tight linebreeding.
