Funny the $64,000 question. Since Dr. Tonomura and Broad Institute have a grant or grants for $93,000. Seems like the trust and security blanket is going to the other research team. In the tune of $30,000 more. Ummm. Gwen

Gwen, it is simple... you are trying to prove something. We are waiting for the experts to do it.  Like I said, I don't care who has the answer, so long as it is the correct answer.

Excuse me, what am I trying to prove? Nothing. You are trying as best as you can to read something more into what I am saying. Just another one of the examples going on in USA today. You obviously don't have a clue. Sorry but I have nothing to prove or desire to prove it . Don't attempt to read my mind. That is a feat if impossibility. All I want is a test to confirm DM in living dogs. A cure would be nice but that is a least 25+ years down the road, especially on the train they ate currently on. But prove something. Precisely,  tell what am I trying to prove. Certainly not anything remotely close to what you believe. Sorry to burst your, thinking you can read minds bubble. Quit the silly games and start caring about the dogs seriously affected with DM, like my "carrier" GSD. Who everyday struggles to get around but enjoys life without calling names or presuming to read minds or what people or trying to prove. Dogs rule! Gwen

Games? Not me. Not about this. You are just too transparent, Gwen. but really, I like you.

Gwen, do you honestly believe that  you are exclusive in your desire to see a valid test that would identify DM status? Why does it always have to be either Clemmons or Coates rather than Clemmons and Coates? Just maybe they both have something to contribute. If funding is the issue that is driving your negativity, then do as BeeTree has suggested many, many times, organize your efforts and present some sort of plan that GSD breeders and the dog community in general can get behind. Coates did that and got OFA's endorsement.

Clearly all this bickering over which researcher is right, which wrong is going nowhere fast. It hasn't worked for years but no one has learned a lesson so nothing changes. I can't help but wonder how much funding has been withheld from Clemmons due to the name calling and argumentive messages to the breed boards.  It's the quintessential example of doing the same thing over and over and expecting different results.

I doubt that anyone reading this thread is not feeling some empathy for your having a dog  you think has DM. I believe you said your dog is over 13 so I would submit that there may be something other than DM going on with him or her but still you continue to bombarb us with the statement - my DM dog tested as a carrier and has DM - in an attempt to prove that the DNA test is worthless. You know very well that diagnosis cannot be made as long as your dog is still alive, so you are using assumptions to support the claim that the DNA test is no good and to discredit Coates et al.

As I have said a million times, until there is proof positive that the current DNA test is not reliable and/or there is something better available, I will continue to test any dog I breed, any puppies I produce, any dogs I buy. The test is not a test of elimination and yes, I would use an at risk for breeding if that dog were breed worthy IMO. However, I would not breed it to another at risk or a carrier.

It might be a good idea to refrain from suggesting that those who do test are less dedicated to the welfare and future of this breed than those who don't.  You're alienating many who could be your biggest allies. Your remark to me - Breed away, Blitzen - is a prime example of shooting off one's mouth before loading one's brain given I have not yet put a litter of GSD's on the ground in almost 50 years. Like you, I just love the breed and only want to see DM eliminated from the gene pool. I don't actually give a damn which research group accomplishes that and I am rooting for all efforts that could help us get to that goal. Show me a plan to fund Clemmons and I'll donate.
