MollyandJack, that would be great! Throughout the week would exactly fit my schedule....lol And it woudnt be too far either, 90min per google is very justyfiable for a regular training schedule.

So, sounds like there are, practically, zilch heavy bred DDR stud dogs out here in America. Bummer. I guess finding a predominantly bred DDR stud with proven herding experience and a "V" rating would be pushing it, huh!!

Aron v Poppitz is the sire of Hetty, who I linked--a former HGH Seigerin--and he's in the US at stud.

Ok, thanks. But, did he herd? I only ask because it's so hard to tell, genetically, if the instinct comes through the sire or dam if the parents were never on sheep.

To make it even more confusing for myself,  I discovered that just because a dog has herding titles doesn't mean he has instinct......could just mean he is smart and well trained!! I am trying to find the dogs that are natural sheep dogs..genetically speaking. The kind that you could walk away for a couple hours and your trained dog will be able to herd without  direction.  So many dogs I see are just constantly being directed and if the owner walked away..I fear they would stop working!!

They accept sheep and willing do what they were taught but they are NOT natural sheep dogs.  I don't know. Does that make sense?

Makes perfect sense to me.  I've seen perfect video examples of puppeteered dogs.  Even one of my own dogs was worked that way for a couple months before I decided it was silly to continue when he had no "appearant" instinct for it.  Doesn't mean it wasn't there, but his high pack drive interfered with his ability to focus less on the handler and more on the livestock.

I have a six month son from this same dog who very clearly has a strong natural instinct for herding.  But, neither of his parents nor any of his siblings so blatantly show his character and drive for it.  His instinct must have either been latently inhereted, or any of his parent's potential for it were either obscured or overpowered by their other character features.  Selective breeding has not been geared toward this work for generations in the pups pedigree.

Smiley, go to Ulf Kinzels' website, White Clover Farm, and see when he has his next HGH trial. Plan to go and watch. You will see true tending dogs there. There may some WL's there, not sure but if you PM Kinzel he can tell you.

I know people in NJ who have trained and titled their own HGH GSD's. The dogs are also  HOT and BHOT Sch 3's and are V rated. They are not WL's, they are GSL's out of Ulf's stock.  If you want their contact information, you can pm me here.

Darly, I just moved here from PA 2 years ago, so I don't know how long there have been GSD's training here for herding or anything else. The club I joined has been around for a while and we train weekly - OB, tracking, protection, agilty, rally, IPO. We welcome all breeds, all GSD lines and encourage owners to work toward the goal of HOT trialing and titling their dogs. Around here there is absolutely no reason for serious GSD owners to not train and attempt to title their dogs no matter what venue. The trainer who has the dock diving pool also offers nose work, basic and advanced OB, and is a behaviorist.

Blitzen,

Thanks! Yes, I know about Ulf. Like I said,  I try to track down and follow every HGH stud in this country!! There is another HGH guy in NJ but he doesn't have GSDs....though his dogs seem very nice!

But, I was wondering if there was a heavy DDR bred dog that was the equivelent.  I know there are Kirschental lines, Ulf's line's, and Manfred Heyne's lines and a couple others.  Lots of primarily west german dogs (to my, inadequate, knowledge)!  I was just curious if there were any American based East German studs who had equal ability.....

Ask Ulf. All the HGH titled dogs  I know of are GSL's many from his breeding and one Urus son. It's my understaning that is hard to find any DDR or mostly DDR dogs today let alone one titled in HGH. You may have to revise your goals if you want to breed your bitch.

I was under the impression that Ulf's dogs were primarily working line, with a few showlines farther back?
