Hi, Hodie Athreya is the name of my Kennel. I will be travelling to Las Vegas, US in mid November, if you could please list the products i will procure them when i am there. Also Dimple was mated a few days before all this happened so I dont know if she has conceived and if so what effect these medicatons may have. I wish she missed just so that all this settles and clears up. For now i have moved her away from the kennel. Is there a risk of transmission to the other dogs if I moved her back to the kennel? What precautions can i take if any? Are there any vaccinations that i should give to the rest of the dogs? Regs, Manoj Sherman

Mr. Sherman, You will be not too far from Colorado when you go to Las Vegas, Nevada. If you are in Colorado, let me know and perhaps you can visit here. There are very good flea and tick products available in the U.S. I will email you privately to give you some names. It is possible you have some similar drugs or chemicals in India that would be much cheaper to use and easier to get. Also, be sure to check with your customs officials to learn if they will allow you to bring the drugs back if you buy them here. Again, it would be very good if your vets could figure out whether this condition really was caused by typanosomiasis or some other pathogen. Do they not have the ability to do some blood tests to try to identify the infecting agent? Of course, now that the treatment has started, it might be impossible to identify the pathogen. Once you actually know the organism involved, then the method of transmission for the pathogen is what is important to know. I know of no vaccine for the typanosomiasis as we do not have that disease here (but I will look it up), but there are other vaccines for some of the tick borne illnesses. If the organism still is alive in her system and the transmitting insect is around and bites her, it is NOT impossible that the other dogs could also be bitten then by the insect and then infected. But just how much a risk that is, I can not say. Keeping flies and ticks and fleas off the dogs is of utmost importance. Sometimes this can be very difficult to do, but making sure the actual kennel is cleaned thoroughly and that there is some sort of insect control, without poisoning the dogs, is the trick. Sometimes it is not too hard to do, and other times it can be very hard to accomplish. I do not know off the top of my head about whether the drug being given is teratogenic or mutagenic or will otherwise harm the pups. It might be, but if you do not treat this, you may well loose the female anyway. I will look this up too. If she is not pregnant, it would be wise to consider not breeding her until you are absolutely certain she is well. More tomorrow at your email address.

Hi,

My german shepherd did the same thing after two years as well.  She circles inatimate objects, spins incessantly, and whines a lot.  I was wondering if you ever resolved the issue with your dog? we have gone to the vet several times and tried everything everyone has told us, and nothing has worked.  The vet put her on Prozac, but that has showed little effect.  Let me know your thoughts please.
