Our female GSD (lines unknown) is a nudger, but she is very gentle and if ignored, she'll walk away and lie down. She usually does it if she wants or needs something such as letting me know it is time to eat or if she needs to go out. She'll also do it if get on the computer and she hasn't gotten much attention during the day.  I don't discourage it in her because she is so sweet, soft and submissive and her ocassional assertiveness is welcomed.   If I had a bully nudger it would be different.

Jenzi isn't aggressive with her nudges by any means (well not intentionally) but it is like being run over by a bulldozer - particularly if I ignore the first nudge or two. There certainly isn't anything sweet about it but the expression on her face is one of "well come on then, I want ..............".

As a younger pup she was quite eloquent. Now she's like a small rhino with attitude (but in an endearing way if that makes sense).

My GSD WL West, used to do this when I 1st got her at 1.5 years of age.  I discourage this bahavior and she nolonger does it.  Me being the alpha person I will dictate when she will get petted.  I choose to groom her or pet her she will not make this decision.  This may be a rank issue with some dogs.  Your dog is making a demand and you are complying to this demand.

Dogs in general first display this behavior as young puppies that want to be feed by their mother.

Prior to this topic I never thought of it as a hearding trait for the GSD, but I suppose it sounds reasonable.

I am not saying what the root reason for your particular dog doing this, over the net I would not know for sure.

But I would suggest if you dont like the behavior then never give her attention when she demands it.  rather only when you decide to give attention to her.  the tough part is for you to be consistent, you can no longer view this behavior as "cute".
