so i went to the website. and i have a question that you guys might beable to asnwer for me.
my 8month gsd with czech bloodline.
i THINK hes really too sharp, he barks when he heres a loud vechile drives by the house.
but my problem is that when i walk with him, when he sees another dog or person, he walks close to me and his hair stands up, doesnt growl or bark. just slowly walks beside me and seems scared or nervous.
Then another problem that i had, i was at the beach just walking him by the water. he was having a blast didnt know what to think of water.
well a older couple came walking. he did his usual slow walk and hair went up. i told him to sit and just let them walk by. but he was asking if he was friendly. i said yes.
so he wanted to pet him. i said ok.. so i was petting my dog. and when the guy got maybe 10 feet away his hair went up, and he started a really loud and clear bark. and he just back away.
i just want to know if his nereves are kinda thin? or he has fear?
will he grow out of this..
and i am taking him to a local pet store for socializeing with other animals and people.
please help

Jim, you usually answer a question with good clarity. i agree 100% on what you said about the age. i can tell at an early age which dogs i am holding back for my police connections. i make mistakes but not very often.

Thanks.
Kaoboy,
If your pups hackles go up around other dogs that is not that big of a deal. However, I do not like a dog's hackles to go up around people. It is a sign of insecurity and can be a potentially big problem. I would be very careful of your dog around strangers from the behavior you have described. I certainly would not let any strangers pet this dog. You are asking for trouble and someone could wind up getting bit.
From what you describe your dog has a temperament issue and yes he is afraid and probably has weak nerves. If I were you I would take this dog everywhere and praise and reward when the dog is acting calm and confident. I would not allow strangers to pet or feed him. I would not pet, console, or calm this dog when he is acting shy or fearful. Do not reinforce that behavior ever. Never pet your dog when he is barking at someone inappropriately, that requires a correction.
You need to start doing some obedience with your dog and he needs firm, consistent rules to follow. There can be no grey areas with this dog only balck and white.
You can train this dog to behave and build his confidence. You will never change his genetics or temperament but you can change how he acts.

get out of czech lines they have tremendous weak nerves and NO courage.. Shamdunc can keep selling you nonsense like a cheap salesman. The fact is CZECH lines are doomed and the cause of crap in the GSD world

i know i have asked this question again and again, but really get no response until now.
his ob is really good. he gets to play when he works for it. etc.
the people and the club say that when someone walks by i should tell him to sit. and make him have eye contact to ingore other poeple and pets.
i have checked online on what stages and ages that fear comes in. and he hits it bang on.
im not saying hes a horrible dog, he loves it with me. he comes to work with me everyday. he always with me.
plus the girls are the drivethrew timmies love him. he not agressive towards them at all. it seems like he fearful towards people he doesnt know at all, or unsure of.
but once he meets them hes all well behaved. likes to play and sniff.
hes actually not scared of much. just poeple n other animals at first.
but that said hes inlove with my friends dogs.. he plays with them all the time.. run and fight over sticks and chase balls etc.
so i have the local pet store booked.. ill keep you posted. but more comments would be grateful..
thank you
and btw, i think his confident is kinda low. but i am working on building that up at the moment with training and rewards when the correct behaviour is shown..

Please offer some advice, you wise sage of the GSD world. Tell us what you would do.
Vikram,
Again I ask, what dogs have you trained? What experience do you have working with dogs? What dogs have you titled? Ever done any helper work? A short little bio on you explaining your experience and knowledge would be greatly appreciated. I certainly think you have limited knowledge and ability with GSD's. Please prove me wrong.
Normally what happens is vikram disappears and never addresses the questions asked. This has been going on for at least two years. So, vikram are you just a condescending, no nothing little ass or do you have any experience to back up your obnoxious statements... I'm waiting, do share

Don't listen to a thing Vikram says. He is just an obnoxious twit. He wouldn't know a real GSD if it bit him. There is nothing wrong with czech dogs, in fact they can be awesome working dogs. I know I work one every day on the street.
