identified in any registry, they are thinking he is imported. She also said that the North shore animal League (very big no-kill shelter on Long Island) wants to come and take
a look at him, but hasn't done so as of yet...they also have contacted a German Shepherd Rescue group (she didn't know which one). They are pretty certain that someone
will adopt him...

The man in charge of the shelter told me they are not a kill shelter, 88% of their dogs get rehomed. When they run out of room, they will PTS an unadoptable dog, if necessary.
This man is very protective of him, they actually have a "adopted" sign on his cage - so this man can personally check over any applications that may come for him, but he is not
adopted as yet.
He would make someone very happy, I hope he finds a wonderful forever home.

"Kill" shelter is a really offensive term for a shelter worker. It is a stressful job for those who care and work there, and to see kill written over and over again is very hard to read. A municipal shelter has no choice but to not be a "no-kill" shelter. There are many factors that can classify a municipal shelter as "kill", the very least being that they are required to take animals surrendered from the public whose wishes are that their pet is eunthanized. Then there are the additional dogs who have no business ever being rehomed.
That said - Santo is very handsome and is going to need some work with training and an understanding owner. He appears to have had very few "inside" experiences. He startled at a lot of those new experiences, but did and does recover from them. Things such as the washing machine, dishes banging around, chairs sliding across the floor, etc. He tosses and gets inot the garbage, he counter and table surfs, and he will jump up and steal food that you are eating from your hand. Santo has a big mouth and barks when left in the yard and is very active in his kennel. When he spends i=time in the office, he is calm, but not quite settled.
On the other hand, he is very good meeting new people, he can be a little mouthy, but does not show any instances of biting with any intentions of harm. He has been intriduced to cats in out lobby cages ans he is unsure about them and will step back to defer. Santo has played wiith two younger female dogs at the shelter. He was introduced to an adult Malinois form them public and reported to be a bit dominant and not a match for that family. I gave him a bath on Wednesday and he was very good in the tub and very good to be brushed and blow dryed with a high powere dryer. He does not have the desire to run away from you when walking off leash in a large area, he sticks near by and responds to being called.
Santo is also a very quick bond. He is very attached to the people he knows, and very loyal to his caretakers.
