I feel strongly about this issue as well. However, something really stinks here.
I would like to know the full story as I am 95% sure this was unjustified but there's always that 5% we may not be hearing about. Maybe its the investigator coming through.
I like to think vets or owners would never put down a 14-18 month old male GSD unless it was for medical reasons. Let me remind us that dogs of all breeds can have psych problems that constitute aggression issues (albeit rare) it does happen. When this occurs even Cesar Milan can't work out their issues.
I am only wondering here!!!!!!!!! Because something is not adding up!!!!!!!!!!!!

You can't blame bad behavior on anyone but yourself if you fail to meet the dog's needs with regard to training and socialization. Dogs need to know what the boundaries are, who is the leader of their pack. They also need love, and more importantly, dedication from their owners. You can't just kill them for being normal...For being what nature intended when their humans failed to teach them a few manners.
I would be hard pressed to give up on my dog that way...I am not wired that way. But for some people, I guess everything is just throwaway...Horrible.
I guess, at least, they had the gonads to do the deed themselves and take care of their own dog, rather than dumping it on an already overburdened rescue system. I'm sure someone, somewhere, would have opened their door to this boy, though.
I have always thought that people dropping their dogs at shelters ought to have to euthanize them themselves...Might make a few fools realize that this is a living, breathing creature whose only desire in life is food, shelter, and love...
Makes me sick!

You make very good points - training - finding a home or shelter, etc.
But the best is that we live in a throw-away world - - - that's what they did. And what do you bet they went puppy shopping within days if not hours.
Would they change if they euthanize him themselves?????

As usual though, its not stopped everyuone here jumping on the bandwaggon with an opinion.
Sure, its sad that young dogs are destroyed, but its a fact of life (in some cases) that this was the right choice to make.

So, I can well believe an owner would have an adolescent male PTS for 'grumbling' at him!

I can't help but think of all the gsd pups that have been referred to me over the last couple years for developing "aggression" at 4/5/6 months old. Excused from training classes, owners scared to death when everyone was telling them they needed to get a handle on this before someone gets hurt. Serious over reacting to normal development of some puppy barking and the start of noticing strangers, territory, etc. MOST of these were very very normal gsd pups, big barky pups owned by inexperienced pet owners, but normal. Not aggressive (an intent or willingness to do harm is how I define that), just experiencing new emotions without having the guideance to work through them. Pups raised without boundaries, rules, or leadership that feel insecure with their new emotions and need some help growing up. Pet people like the idea of a german shepherd but not many of them really understand what it means to raise and provide for one, and that they are taking on a JOB and RESPONSIBLITY to train and guide them properly.
