I must disagree with the statement that surgery isn't recommended. We have here in my state the most well respected Ortho Vet. People come from all over to him. I have a friend who's GSD had an accident at 9 months old while playing with the neighbor's dog in the snow. Well the young dog was running full speed, slid across the snow and smacked her back side into a parked car. To make a long story short their local vet recommended surgery right away. I told her before you resort to surgery take the dog to the specialist; he will tell you his honest input and expected prognosis.
She took the dog, dog had surgery 3 days later on the one hip. After she healed up she had to have the other one done too. But guess what??? 2 years later the dog moves, plays and walks perfectly fine. You can't tell she ever had a double hip surgery. They keep her weight on track and of course the dog cant do any sport BUT she is not in pain and living a healthy life with her family. They spent $3500 on the surgeries and said she was worth it.
Not all dogs have a bad outcome from surgery. In fact this vet said the younger the dog the more optimistic he is on the overall recovery.

Let me offer just one example for your discretion, randomly copy/pasted from a board:
…. The poor animal clearly had very bad hips….”
It would be very interesting to know who this person with the seemingly infallible x-ray vision you quote might be. He/she might perhaps be able to spare a lot of us regularly paying considerable amounts for hip_ and elbow evaluations quite a bit by telling us our dogs’ hip scores just looking at videos of them. If you wanted to really prove anything, you picked a very bad quote and either you didn’t find better or there isn’t any better?
“by Jantie on 17 March 2010 - 06:03
Would be nice if you would give me some facts, to back up your argument, that is.
Looks like there ain't much behind it?”
Jantie I beg of you to provide facts that the winner at Crufts ‘clearly has very bad hips.’ To the best of my knowledge the particular dog has passed all health checks and, by the way, it was done by appropriate professionals using the newest technology and not x-ray vision opinion. If you’re not able to produce facts regarding the hip scores of this particular dog you’re demeaning, then I beg you to please take the quality of your whole life (or perhaps lack thereof) into serious reconsideration.
A few years back, just after discovering your blog, I thought that I might perhaps learn something from you… You’ve lost me along the way. Fanaticism hasn’t brought anything positive of lasting value in life and only serves to blind the fanatic and creating MUCH injustice.

the male that attained best of breed at crufts had a hip score of 3-3,and an elbow score of 0-0.hip scores in the uk goes up to 53 on each leg and elbows up to 3.obviously the lower and even the score the better.so you can see that he has a very low hip score and his elbow dysplasia free.he is breed surveyed in germany, has his sch3 ,koerung, and has is ad qualification(biked for 20km)not sure if he is breed surveyed in the uk,but more than likely he is.he is a totally unexagerated animal of the correct type.he moved very well at crufts and well deserved the accolade of BEST OF BREED.the breeder/owner is a very nice person and was exulted when he won, still put him in the group even tho.she knew that the group judge preferrred the alsatian type(he had judged the uk gsd champ.show in nov.2009,which is for alsatians)then came the bombshell,a tv program on sat 13th.mar)2 days after the gsd judging, when there was no one there to complain immediately about the coverage.DISGUSTING TREATMENT IS ALL I CAN SAY.Carole Spelman.

Hi folks!
I've learned my lesson on what is going on on discussionboards, so I will not go there.
But very funny it is indeed, to be called a nutter, by somebody who received all the info he/she has, totally based on "hear say".
Uber Land says it well. Nobody knows, if they weren't there. And people don't even want to believe my story which I have published (painstakingly detailed) on my weblog. They make their own story, so they can sleep better.
Silbersee leads the troops, and tosses and turns all she can. Why would she do that? And why would she put so much energy in badmouthing me? She is in the middle of it all, with best contacts to some of the supposedly best breeders in Germany. They certainly don't want to hear anything bad about their darlings. "Nothing wrong with our beloved dogs! HD? non-existent!, and even if a dog has a bit of HD, so what? he can still work! No big deal!"
Anyway. Just wanted to repeat what I said in the intro: What you breed is what you get. Until breeders stop denying these huge health problems (problems of which the news is clearly spreading through Europe - Pedigree Dogs Exposed - Shepherd Dog, Nursing Case? - Bateson Inquiry - Minor incident at Crufts 2010, etc), the GSD will keep going under. So we must collect information and spread it.
I have already spoken to the Kennel Club and will provide them the most detailed information about the HD scheme in the SV/WUSV, and the inside problems currently being pursued in German courts. As David (with whom I have no personal problem whatsoever) said, the gloves are off. And the goal can only be to ensure that the GSD gets healthier again. I daresay, we're all striving for a better dog. So our goals are very much the same.
It's not "the world" that has to change, the world only wants to see healthy dogs, it's the associations that don't enforce the necessary breeding regulations that need to be tackled.
I wish everyone a healthy GSD!
Still cool!
Jan
P.S. The dog was not butchered! He was scientifically examined at one of the best veterinary clinics in Europe and the autopsy findings will help scientists in their quest for healthier dogs. Shamefull it is how people are being slaughtered on public forums (merely based on hear say), but that's the nature of some people.
And by the way, there is no such thing as an Alsation. People did not want to use the word German Shepherd ("Don't mention the war!!"), so they took another word. FOR THE SAME DOG!

So you were at crufts then jantie were you, no you were not so going by what you say you dont know because you were not there so keep your asumptions to your self, you keep saying you want healthy dogs then check out the crufts BOB you will not get any healthier than that so your statements do not hold up but nothing new there.

Thanks Dawn!
I'm gonna make sure, Noddi, that nothing dies out here.
Public awareness is elementary, and so far, it's my humble opinion that I haven't done all that bad.
It's NOT about the last laugh! It's about the last healthy dog, and if people will keep shooting on the pianists, you'll be ruining the breed.
Have added a gallery for your pleasure by the way:

P.S.: BOB, IF we are talking the same dog here, has a grandfather dying aged 8 from cancer, and a mother with an HD3 Noch Zugelassen (still admissable)?
And people here start up a million Cruft threads, shamefully insulted as they are, when the public advises them of the wobbly look??
The world is clearly rejecting what you are breeding.
So, I guess it's time to start the thinking!
Have a pleasant weekend!
