Hi Jenni,

thankyou - your advice is very helpful.

we finished the course of metronidazole on tuesday and started the panacur on Thursday - so he's only had the one dose of it so far - glad you mentioned the panacur course being 5 -7 days for giardia treatment as when I emailed the breeder to give him an update he stressed that the panacur should only be given for 3 days despite what my vet has said.

thanks again

Hi Ronnie
The breeder is correct 3 days of panacur, thats what my vet told me to give to my puppy with 5 days of antibiotics.I had no problems after that.

 Hi Ronnie

Try and find out when your puppy first was poorly.  Was it before his first vaccination or after.  If it is after then it could be that your puppy has developed Parvo or had a very bad response to the vaccine.  Many vets wont recognise this, but a friend of mine nearly lost her pug puppy due to a reaction in her pug puppy within 24hrs of the first vaccination.

Once you know when your puppy was first sick you can approach the problems in a different way and if it is due to the vaccination please look at alternatives to vaccinations such as nosodes as it is possible he will get ill again if you were to do a booster injection.

Good luck with your little feller.

Hello Ronnie

I would also suspect that the vaccination may be the problem. Some 5-6 years ago, I had 3 litters (several months between each litter) vaccinated at 7 weeks old, prior to them going to their new homes. All three litters developed diarrhoea within 5 days of the vaccine, some only mild and some much more severe. When this happened for the 3rd time, they were tested...they had developed parvo! All recovered except one puppy. Some of these pups also went on to develop giarrdia and campylobacter, but this was after the parvo. Interestingly, three of my fully vaccinated adults also developed parvo. After many months of searching for information, I discovered that one of the side effects of vaccination is a transitory decrease in the white blood cells for a period of 7-10 days, thus making the immune system less competent and the puppy more suseptible to diseases such as parvo, giarrdia, campylobacter etc.
I would now never vaccinate a puppy until at least 10 weeks of age and leave 4 weeks between vaccines. In the meantime, I would give homoeopathic nosodes from 3 weeks of age until after the vaccination period is completed. Obviously, ever breeder has their own preferred way of doing things, but I have found that it has worked for me.
Certainly, the puppy should not have been given his second vaccination unless he was 100% healthy. I hope he improves very soon.

Katrina

Hi all,

just wanted to post a quick update.

Murphy is doing really well - normal poops for a few days now (can't believe how obsessed I have become with dog poop! lol) and he has lots of energy. He weighs ~ 5kg which means he's doubled his body weight in the two weeks he has been with us.
He is such a joy - can't tell you how much we love him and just how relieved we are that he is starting to thrive. Anyway, couldn't resist posting a few piccies - he's been out in the snow this morning - wasn't so sure at first but was soon loving it.

Thanks again  for your help and advice

Thank you so much for keeping us informed on his well being.  I totally understand where you are coming from re poop - sad what us dog owners worry about eh?

Keep up the good work, cant wait to see him as a big lad.

That has got to be one of the cutest puppies I have ever seen in my life. Happy to hear he's on the mend.
