Vigil for Victims of Canine Discrimination
 De Animal Farm Foundation
saturday, february 4, 2012

  • Hora
    Since 16:00 to 17:00

  • where

Josie Robertson Plaza (Lincoln Center, Columbus Avenue between 62nd and 65th Streets), Columbus Avenue between 62nd and 65th Streets, New York, NY

  • Descripción

Animal Farm Foundation will lead a peaceful vigil to remember Nick Santino, Rocco the "pit bull" dog, and all victims of canine discrimination. We are devastated by the inhumanity and injustice that Mr. Santino and Rocco experienced prior to their deaths.

Our goal for th...is vigil is to end the unnecessary, fear-based discrimination that some "pit bull" dogs and their owners face, particularly with regard to housing matters. We wish to empower community members with information and resources to replace fear with facts, and to advocate for equal treatment and opportunity for "pit bull" dogs and their owners.

Please meet at 4:00 pm at the Josie Robertson Plaza (at the Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts). We will march down West 64th Street past "One Lincoln Plaza," the building where Mr. Santino and Rocco lived.

    A press conference will follow.

Please leave your dogs at home. Thank you.

    Blitzen said,

We're all here cause we're not all there?

I think I'm going to have that done up in cross-stitch and hang it next to my computer.

I do agree that his state of mind was probably already on edge to begin with, and the situation with Rocco just pushed him over the edge...That he put the dog down should have been a flashing red sign to his friends, though, because that's often the very last thing someone does before they kill themselves--make sure their pet is 'safe'.

    Words worth repeating.

the best friend a man has in this world may turn against him and become his enemy. His son and daughter that he has reared with loving care may become ungrateful. Those who are nearest and dearest to us, those whom we trust with our happiness and our good name, may become traitors to their faith. The money that a man has he may lose. It flies away from him when he may need it most. Man's reputation may be sacrificed in a moment of ill considered action. The people who are prone to fall on their knees and do us honor when success is with us may be the first to throw the stone of malice when failure settles its cloud upon our head.

The one absolutely unselfish friend that man can have in this selfish world, the one that never deserts him, the one that never proves ungrateful or treacherous, is his DOG. A man's dog stands by him in prosperity and in poverty, in health and in sickness. He will sleep on the cold ground, where the wintry winds blow and the snow drives fiercely, if only he may be near his master's side. He will kiss the hand that has no food to offer, he will lick the wounds and sores that come in encounter with the roughness of the world. He guards the sleep of his pauper master as if he were a prince. When all other friends desert, he remains. When riches take wing and reputation falls to pieces, he is as constant in his love as the sun in its journey through the heavens. If fortune drives the master forth an outcast into the cold, friendless and homeless, the faithful dog asks no higher privilege than that of accompanying him to guard him against danger, and to fight against his enemies. When the last scene of all comes, and death takes his master in its embrace and his body is laid away in the cold ground, no matter if all other friends pursue their way, there by his graveside will the noble dog be found, his head between his paws and his eyes sad, but open in alert watchfulness, faithful and true even to death.

-Senator George Vest, 1870. RIP ROCCO and NICK

Save Heidi Home: Deadline 2/9! Antiquated Laws and
    More Breed discrimination at work!

Help Save Heidi: Stop Her Destruction by Royal Oak

Time is of the essence to save Heidi’s life. A final decision on Heidi’s fate will be made on February 9th, 2012.

Heidi is our 5 year old rescued Doberman Pincher. Because of her excited reaction to a stranger who tried to pet her, Royal Oak is now requiring her destruction orremoval from our family. This is heartbreaking and totally unnecessary.
We beg you to read Heidi’s story and sign our on-line petition to the City of Royal Oak. This asks the city to dismiss the charges & this unreasonably harsh penalty. PLEASE SIGN AND FORWARD THIS AS QUICKLY AS POSSIBLE TO ALLYOUR FRIENDS & FAMILY.Your own dog may be at risk for this same unreasonable treatment in the future.

    Her Story:
We adopted Heidi almost 4 years ago from a well-established and reputable rescue organization specializing in the Doberman breed. Like most Doberman, Heidi is a very intelligent and energetic dog. She is a loving & loyal member of our family.
In October, while out for a leashed walk to a local market, a stranger approached suddenly wanting to pet her. Startled and in her excitement, Heidi popped up at the same time that the stranger bent over to pet her. She collided with his face. He has claimed this resulted in a broken nose and reported the accident to Royal Oak Police.
Royal Oak is now prosecuting this as a dog bite/attack!The Assistant Deputy City Attorney has offered to dismiss the criminal charges only if Heidi is destroyed or removed from her loving family in Royal Oak. This is happening to our family with a 30+ year history as law abiding Royal Oak residents. Heidi has no previous incidents of aggressive behavior and is a well trained, obedient, loving success story of a Doberman rescue.
All dog owners must be aware of the risks of criminal prosecution under the antiquated Michigan statutes written in 1919 and the paranoid overreaction by local city officials who are prosecuting dog breeds, not dog attack cases.

Time is of the essence to save Heidi’s life. A final decision on Heidi’s fate will be made on February 9th, 2012.

"The best friend a man has in this world may turn against him and become his enemy"...
     .."
The story of where this came from is almost as moving as the prose - George Vest, as an attorney was representing a man who's coon dog Old Drum had been killed by a neighbour, he had sworn he would win the case or apologize to every dog in the state of Missouri. This was a part of his arguments - he won, and its an enduring bit of legal prose. There is a statue of the dog outside the courthouse.
