I don't care if my dogs tear up sticks and  crap when we're out and about.  In fact  my male is pretty funny, when we go for unleashed walks, he's pretty fanatical about having something in his mouth, usually looks for big sticks or logs.  First he has to strip any small limbs from them, then he carries them unless they're too big for his mouth,  then he tries to roll them along with his front legs, very comical.   My old Tiekerhook GSD used to like to drag car tires around.

My friend has a bitch that's really funny.  She thinks all sticks on the ground belong to her, and her alone.  If I go walking with my friend and his bitch is out, I know better than to pick anything off the ground.  Ever since I did it one stinking time she NEVER forgets, and even though it seems like she isn't paying a lick of attention, reach towards the ground and it's OH YEAH GAME ON, but she's lightening fast, tough as nails,  plays for keeps and she always wins!  She's actually one of my favorite dogs in the world.

As I said in my original post, I'm looking at this from a schutzhund point of view, balls are for training time, or when I need to burn off his energy,  take the edge off him, I'll toss them for him til he's a little tired.

Agreed. I was just presenting other things dogs can trash their teeth on.

Caleb does what you describe your friend's dog doing. My dad jokes and always says stuff like "if you think you might want to pick it up, it's his. If he ignored it ten minutes ago, it's his. If he will ignore it again tomorrow, it's his. If he has ever looked at it, it's his. If it doesn't look like he wants it or is even aware it exists, it's his." LOL  Not the best "fetch" dog in the world.

And yes, his teeth are about 1/8" -1/4" shorter than they were about 7 years ago. Such is life;-) I would hate for someone to think I did that though.

ok, hows this for wear and tear on a 4 year old male (they are whiter than they look for some reason on photo they have a yellow tint) ?.....also would coral calcium be a good idea to add to their meals?

LOL LadyFrost, that looks waaaaaaaaaaaay better than the wear on my four year old male's teeth. I'd say your dog's teeth look pretty decent.

Oh, wow. Those teeth look great. No worries, there.

I had occasion to sit on the ground and look up at Caleb's open mouth yesterday, and they are AWFUL! Might as well have taken a chisel to them, front to back. His canines are reduced by about 1/3...he had HUGE canines in his youth, and the rest of them, all the way to the back are flat-topped and worn down about 30-40% all over. Upon examining his area of the yard, I found some dens he'd made himself by clearing out some bushes, and the branches I found were pretty decent-sized, and it was obvious they had been gnawed through so he could make his little hideaways. I have known for many years that I would most likely be doing some major dental work on that dog before he dies. I'm honestly surprised I haven't yet.

Another thing..........does anyone else have a dog whose teeth are CLEAN but yellow? I'm not talking about plaque- the teeth are clean, gums are healthy, but the teeth are yellowish and getting worse. My question was about our well water- iron, etc. Could that be enough to tint his teeth like that? I know what it does to my white clothes, so I gotta wonder.
