For most American dogs it is easy to tell the difference between male and female heads.
Most of the males in my bitches pedigree have very male head.

I remember Rik posted a pic of an American line male not too long ago, and I called it a 'she', then had to go back and edit my post when I saw this thing hanging down between its legs!

OK here is a pic of a nice American dog's head. This is my mentor's breeding and all her dogs are pretty consistent--she does produce mnice masucline heads.

What do you think of this male head?
Male or female?

But I will add this; I think the dogs of today are better put together as far as total body structure which I hope in the future with our genetic/health testing will buy them some very healthy and long lives. When I was showing heavily I remember mid 80's or so that their hip percentage rate of HD was like in the 80 percentile; that is very scarey number, in otherwards 80% of the dogs were coming up with hip/elbow dysplasia. Golden's were in the 60-80 somewhere; if you could even find one that had any hips. That is what kept me out of the GSD breed then; not even thinking about what Germany was producing; just american show lines. Boy talk about tunnel vision.
