I love the very sound top lines of the American GSDs.

"Now, as for American style GSDs, I'll gladly sing Dallas's praises! He was one of the few GSDs of recent years that stood on his feet instead of his hocks. He had a nice masculine head, whereas with most American dogs, it's very hard to tell the males from the females. He had good bone, and a nice temperment."

For most American dogs it is easy to tell the difference between male and female heads.

Most of the males in my bitches pedigree have very male head.

HD, could I see your bitch's pedigree? If that is true, the heads are definitely improving, and that would be a very nice thing to see.

I remember Rik posted a pic of an American line male not too long ago, and I called it a 'she', then had to go back and edit my post when I saw this thing hanging down between its legs!   blush

Hey Sunsilver, thanks for reposting that link.  I sorta remember some of it but I think I will go back and reread it later.  By the way, that was what my mentor told me and I was just repeating it.  Even tho I know some of the bloodlines I'm not well versed enough to know exactly what role they played.  But it also seems I have heard that before, a long time ago, that they sent their worst over here.  As far as Ernest Loeb goes it was my understanding that he himeself slipped in and out and got some dogs over here.

OK here is a pic of a nice American dog's head.  This is my mentor's breeding and all her dogs are pretty consistent--she does produce mnice masucline heads.

What do you think of this male head?

Male or female?

by HighDesertGSD on 03 May 2011 - 21:05

CH (US) Lorien's Stepaside

paternal grandsire.

Head not quite as large but is this not male enough? Wide skull.

Elegant IMO.

I see that American GSD does not have as good a shoulder as the German !! Is what I see correct?

Actually Ibrahim, most do have better shoulders than the german lines.  More of a "ground overing gate" which is what got them into trouble along with their long backs and overangulated rears.  Eeeeks.  Overall balance is what I like and i love that picture of Carly you put up,  really has beautiful balance and very masculine.  Really a looker.

But I will add this;  I think the dogs of today are better put together as far as total body structure which I hope in the future with our genetic/health testing will buy them some very healthy and long lives.  When I was showing heavily I remember mid 80's or so that their hip percentage rate of HD was like in the 80 percentile;  that is very scarey number, in otherwards 80% of the dogs were coming up with hip/elbow dysplasia.  Golden's were in the 60-80 somewhere;  if you could even find one that had any hips.  That is what kept me out of the GSD breed then; not even thinking about what Germany was producing;  just american show lines.  Boy talk about tunnel vision.  surprise

Sorry I was thinking that was Carly Policia Slovica;  but it's Quanto;  they seem similar, maybe not so much if you put the pic's together and evaluated.  Colors are beautiful.
