I knew a woman who had that done on her dog -- she did schutzhund with her for several years--was a fantastic result for them. The dog always had a hitch in her gait, but it was pain free.

I had heard term "hitch in her gate" before...what does it mean? what does it look like?

by BlackthornGSD on 12 May 2011 - 18:05
Just, well, that leg is a little shorter so it's not the smooth motion you see in a totally sound dog. A "hitch" would be like a pause or stutter in the movement.

Oh LF, that is just heart breaking. I am sorry.
I have the best Ortho surgeon in the Nation here.. maybe you can get a consultation with him.
Let me know if I can help. It is far but hell you could stay here with me if you decided to do so.

I have not read this entire thread so maybe someone has already mentioned - but the FHO surgery would be an option for Baily at her age - they remove the femur heads. The dog forms a "callous" false socket and there is no bone to bone contact, so no pain. The dog will not be "sound" because the legs are shorter and "looser" but there is no pain. So the dog can live out a normal life and yes even chase balls for a very long good lifetime. Its' also one of the cheaper surgeries but I think it needs to be done before the dog is one year old or so.

The dog is already scheduled for FHO surgery in a couple of weeks.
