I think Hexe hit it on the head when she said "hearing changes" and not just hearing loss. Some sounds just start to sound weird as hear is lost.
I once watched a documentary on hearing and the loss of it. They played the sounds that they actually hear and they are and could be very scarey. Nothing like normal sounds. Squeeks and pitch modulation etc.
Makes sence!
