MVF- Agree that the Mastiff in the news story at 308 lbs, is sadly overweight. Looks like the poor guy can't move around properly. At least he could rally himself to breed type and protect his castle.

Rik- you asked me "How did the daughter do in the ring." Damon was #1 Mastiff, AKC breed points, in 1984 after campaigning all year as far away from Florida as Texas ( large entry at Houston cluster) and Ohio (large entry at Ravenna cluster ) I enjoyed the beautiful show sites at Lexington, KY, Old Dominion, VA and Bucks County, PA the most.
We showed his fawn daughter Ch. Scarey Creek's Shanda in 1985 and she was #1 Mastiff bitch, #1 Mastiff that year was a handsome California male. It was interesting to special a bitch. Most all-breed judges didn't know the Mastiff breed well and defaulted to putting up a big headed male for Best of Breed, even straight stifled, sloppy males. Shanda was a big, doggy bitch and like her Dad, had a dark eye, level topline, proper rear angulation, and was a lovely mover with several Group placements. I always owner handled our Mastiffs in the classes and you probably remember Rik it was a thrill to finish your breeding to earn their Championship. I finished Shanda in Philadelphia during the1984 AKC Centennial Show weekend although attending a benched show with a giant dog was not fun. Unfortunately my doggy bitch Shanda was never able to conceive a litter.

Shanda's littermate, Ch. Scarey Creek's Sasha, winning Mastiff Veteran Class in 1989  at 8 years old. Sasha was a beautiful black brindle like her sire Ch. Scarey Creek's Damon. Although grey in her muzzle, still dignified and healthy at 8, retaining her correct topline and beautiful angulation. She moved beautifully around the ring and was put up over several others by Judge Annie Rogers Clark to much cheering and clapping. Grand matron she was. Love this color in a Mastiff although I always faulted that small white spot on her chest. Daddy Damon had no white on him.

Here's my first Mastiff, Ch. Scarey Creek's Silver Fancy, "Elsa". Again, English not American bloodlines. She was a great family companion. Second picture is Elsa, Am. & Bah. Ch. Scarey Creek's Bart, and our bi-color German Shepherd Jai, ears only on left. Jai had lovely dark eyes too. Going to Bahamas was fun, traveling with a 180 lb Mastiff was not.
