A woman I know was considering buying him...wish I could remember what year. Just about 30 years ago. He was valued at $60,000 at the time, as I recall. But even back then I preferred working lines. I guess I have no taste at all.

Vom Marischal
The sub title of the book you will see says 'a genetic history of the breed'. The dog on the cover is part of that history whether we like it or not. (No don't insult the man - you'll have SueB after you!).
I prefer the structure of working lines too. But I do accept that all GSD's no matter the shape are part of it's history.
Uber Land, exactly how I interpret it in terms of breeding (actually I don't see any other way to interpret it).

Yes... whites, but what about the blues and livers you're all on about?
Interesting that you admit to insulting him now, Dingo... didn't you deny it at the time?

No, that was me. If they are quoting him (Willis?) accurately, then I don't actually agree with what he said, although Dingodog makes a good point saying that it's the breed history like it or not. But poor old Manhattan was winning back in the '80s, as we all know a scary time in the history of American show lines. They are a lot better than that now. Just because he was popular doesn't actually mean he was a good idea...he seems like a temporary fad to me, and I sure do wish Willis had used a better illustration than a dog that exemplifies Alsation conformation.
Blue and liver and white dogs, and all the permutations thereof, are registrable but not showable. Those colors are disqualifying faults in the AKC show ring. Again, if they accidentally show up in a good litter, OH WELL, Find them homes. But to breed them on purpose is to deliberately breed faults in, with all the attention on breeding the fault in and no focus on breeding the good stuff in. That can't be good.

Which standard allows apricot shepherds without fault?
AKC Standard
"Color
The German Shepherd Dog varies in color, and most colors are permissible. Strong rich colors are preferred. Pale, washed-out colors and blues or livers are serious faults. A white dog must be disqualified."
Disqualifications
Dogs with noses not predominantly black.
White dogs
UKC Standard
"Color
The German Shepherd Dog comes in many colors and white. In evaluating colored dogs, strong, deep colors are preferred. Nose, lips, and eyerims must have dark pigment, regardless of coat color. Color faults are minor in comparison to defects of type and structure.
Serious faults: Pale, washed-out colors; blue; liver.
Disqualification: Albinism."
SV Standard
Colors
Black with reddish-brown, brown, tan, and/or light gray markings. Solid black. Sable with dark overcast. Black saddle and mask.
Inconspicuous, small white chest markings, likewise light color on the insides, are allowed but not desirable. The nose bulb must be black in all colors of the breed. Missing mask, light (piercing) eye color, as well as light to whitish markings at chest and under/inner sides, light claws, and red-tipped tail are to be considered as deficient pigment. The undercoat has a light gray color. The color white is not permitted.
Major Faults;
• Considerably lacking in pigment;
Disqualifying Faults (also ineligible for breed survey):
White haircoat even if the dog has dark eyes and nails;

Apparently the United Kingdom one. KC.
Colour
Black or black saddle with tan, or gold to light grey markings. All black, all grey, with lighter or brown markings referred to as Sables. Nose black. Light markings on chest or very pale colour on inside of legs permissible but undesirable, as are whitish nails, red-tipped tails or wishy-washy faded colours defined as lacking in pigmentation. Blues, livers, albinos, whites (i.e. almost pure white dogs with black noses) and near whites highly undesirable. Undercoat, except in all black dogs, usually grey or fawn. Colour in itself is of secondary importance having no effect on character or fitness for work. Final colour of a young dog only ascertained when outer coat has developed.
But it doesn't sound like it to ME. Still, I guess the UK people are seeing off colors in the ring?

Missbeeb
You really are losing the plot. I never insulted MW, I was simply quoting him at the time Sue got all upset about it because he was ill. I would hardly keep quoting him if I didn't agree with what he said would I. Someone else on this thread insulted him by saying that he had been known to put out false information. DO read the posts if you're going to comment on them.
Blues and livers, read the quote from MW again MB.
SitasMom, VM - The UK KC do not accept these colours at present. The point is that MW said they shouldn't be excluded, and wrote to the kennel club in some detail regarding colours, so it is POSSIBLE that the UK KC could decide to include them in the future. Not that they have.

(No don't insult the man - you'll have SueB after you!).
Your post, Dingo!
Can't understand why you're picky about this, it's what you do all the time... select the bits you fancy!

Just trying to put you right MissB, since you have your facts wrong.
What I was trying to say was that I had SueB after me when I hadn't insulted him, so would seriously recommend that they didn't actually insult him.
There I've tried to space that out so you can read it slowly and perhaps get it this time?
