Shows he knew who stepped on him, anyway!
We have to remember too that dogs aren't 100% predictable. For example, my laid-back 4 year old male has suddenly decided that he doesn't like me grooming his hindquarters or clipping the nails on his hind feet. So he's decided that the way to shoo me off is to turn his head and gently grip my wrist. When he does it I grab his head and shove it down on the floor and tell him "Head DOWN." He'll keep it down for a few minutes, and then get uppity again.
There's no malice involved, just a minor contest of wills going on - I'm over 6 feet tall and 200 lbs. and he knows I can kick his ass, so there's no actual danger here. But it does show that behaviors can change even in adult dogs.

Also, showing stranger agression is the least of your dog's problems.

So don't take this the wrong way, it's just that the two situations are different enough that they would likely generate differing types of advice as a matter of course.
