R1,
You will get some relief after teaching the long down, if Prince does not
out properly in the future you can fall back on PLATZ!!!..( down)... That works 90% of the time
as an emergency brake. If needed. That's why teaching the long down is so important.
it will give a better off leash control when it's really needed. But continue to take him out
and socialize him to unfamiliar surroundings and people. This ls the best way to desensitize him to
strangers. And absolutely look for friends and fellow hundsman to give a hand.
Tons of dog training literature out there, and Magazines. You will be surprised at all the little nuggets of
information you can pick up by reading an article by a good trainer. You sound like you are looking
for good info as is every one else here, don't be embarrassed about that.
I have worked some tough dogs and if they don't out on command ....I yell Platz!!
This breaks through the barrier of non compliance.
They my not platz... but they out. The first thing people may say is this a cop out...
no pun intended, but it has never been a problem for me. And helps train the dog
to out on command.

I would have to see this aggression towards strangers but that in itself is not necessarily a bad thing.
Having control and obedience even over distractions is the key.
Socializing with family and friends even a kindly stranger is great, but if your dog doesn't like certain people I find that a plus.
As long as you have control.

you dont seem like a fool to me.you seem like someone with a lot of compassion who is looking hard for help to get the results you need in a way you can stomach, understand and practise.this new trainer sounds like a disgrace and if i were you i would never go back either.
if you dont like the thought of confronting the trainer perhaps your husband or someone could ring the trainer and tell them you want your money back because of the disgusting brutality you and your daughter have witnessed.its not always easy to confront someone who has obviously caused you so much discomfort and made you feel physically sick.
good luck with your boy.

Don't blame the trainer for their methods, just decide if you want to continue, or not. Negotiate from there. End of story.

rugar1-YOU are a piece of work!#@ I can not believe that you wanted another trainer to come to your current trainers class and you don't think this is a conflict of interest! OMG- obviously your not happy with the 1st trainer or you wouldn't be at the 2nd trainers! and FOR SURE-it IS a conflict.I would have charged both YOU and your 'trainer' for the lesson! and as far as video taping...totally unaceptable without permission! What a snooty *#% move - WHO do you think you are sneeking around doing this? did you ask permission?
2nd-stick to horses! you seem to be good at it...dogs, not so good--my guess is that your horses come already trained - you just ride.....JMO, but - as far as your training capabilities, YOU are sending conflicting messages to the dog, rewarding for and encouraging bad behavior. grimster is absolutely correct in theory. the RESPONSIBILITY (liability) and proper training ultimately rests with the handler. Obviously - you just don't 'get it'. you need to observe the mother(bitch) with her whelp-the correction for mis-behaving IS severe. puppies yelp, submit, and think twice before doing it again....humm? regarding the 'head smacking' it's an age old training jesture for attention/shock to get the dog re-focused, did the dog pass out from the smack? I doubt it. like, how hard can you smack with your hand- NOT very hard.....>:-0 sounds to me like the golden is a very (typically) soft dog - my guess is, the dog will NEVER run away from the handler again and will absolutely come when called! this may have saved his life down the road.....humm something to think about. And YOU are very luck that your collar did not break or slip off, and little Prince got into a dog fight, or worse, injured the golden....WHO would be liable then? the trainer? YOU? the owner? your the liablility to the trainer -- PM me their name, I will give them a heads up to drop you from the program!!

Double really?
by Sangreinu on 19 August 2010 - 20:08
ill see your double really and raise
what the hell???
someone sounds more than a bit overly defensive. looks like fear biting to me
ruger, you're doing your best to get your dog to a happy balanced place. No one can fault you for that. From what you've told us it sounds more than reasonable not to want to associate with that trainer further. I haven't had this issue myself so i don't know how much real advise I can give you. However I will wish you luck on future progression and success with Prince.

buffarmer...I am a piece of work there is no doubt about it...lol..
I was working with a behaviorist who was coming to my home to work with me privately. It was common knowledge that my goal was to attend a Schutzhund obedience style class. I wanted the behavior trainer to accompany me to watch Prince's behavior. Thats all...no big thing...would have been happy to pay extra, but was not given the option...
As far as the video taping, there was nothing sneaky about it. All the video taping was done right out in the open. I have always video taped my lessons and have NEVER had a trainer uncomfortable with it. This trainer apparently did not have a problem either.
Actually our horses compete very well ..Thank you...and you are right, our horses come broke and ready to ride....
After the incident with the golden and Prince, the trainer told me that Prince had reacted appropriately for the situation . The trainer did not give Prince's behavior a minute of thought... Prince was not the issue...
As far as the way the trainer handled the golden....I have said all that I need to say on the subject...My description was accurate and the video speaks for itself...DONE..
No need to contact the trainer ...I am not going back ....by my choice...
