This is my pet peeve.
People do not teach their kids how to recognize danger rather they just remove potential danger from the kids path. Later on then these kids became adults and have kids them selves and do not recognize the danger their kids are in when they are in one. Than if something bad happens they blame others and sue or they blame the dog. They get a dog and do not know how their children should behave around animals and thus do not teach them how to behave around them and if the child is too young to know any better they let the child behave improperly around a dog. What makes the dog tick, aggravates him, or awakens his instincts is of no consequence, In the mind of these people think that their dog is a derivative of Lassie or Old Yeller. and believe that their dog is 100% safe. I am around dogs for 44 years and I have not seen one yet. The dog may not just bite but may knock little kid down on sharp edge of the table and so on.
Infinity of situations is possible.
1. Teach your kids what is dangerous. It is not just next door pedophile but also your own and your kid's actions.
2. Teach your kids how to behave around dogs. Yours or strange.
3. Teach them ho to swim.
4. and not to play on the freeway and on the sloping roof of a tall building.
5. and point these things gently but firmly to your stupid friend and neighbor too.
I guess you got my point.

No, it would be "Child killed by 89 Pontiac owned by pit bull owner"... it ALL depends on WHAT is the fad. That is how the media operates.
What ever happened to the dog as "nanny"? Do you seriously think that our foremothers and fathers "locked" the dog up while out working in the fields? The kids and the dogs hung out together. In fact, the dog was supposed to look after the kid. And DID.
Did not one of you grow up with a family dog? Did you mom put the dog "up" everytime she went to bring in the wash?
NONSENSE.
IF YOU CANT TRUST YOUR DOG 100% WITH YOUR CHILD - DONT HAVE IT AROUND YOUR CHILD EVER. If people would just use a bit of old fashion common sense they would look back in history and see that this is how it MUST be. Otherwise, you have kids getting killed by dogs.
Kids have always gotten killed by dogs, around 10 to 20 a year in the US since records of any type were killed. The breed(s) involved are always varied, with groupings of dogs representing the "fad" dogs always chalking up the most during the time frame they are being abused. Bloodhounds, newfoundlands, st bernards, german shepherds, pit bulls, rottweilers, all have taken their turn as "the bad boys". (Read Karen Delises excellent book, the pit bull placebo for a really fantastic look at this subject.)
It seems to me that kids used to be killed much more by neighborhood dogs and nowadays a lot more by the dog owned by family. The number of children killed, compared the the amount of interaction is TINY, but each one is a HUGE tragedy.

If I couldn't trust one of them, I would not have them."

I AM a mother of a 3 year old and a 2 year old. As sorry as I feel for the family the responsibility for the death of this child lies SOLELY at their feet. How can someone "take a nap" with their toddler running around? Where were they sleeping in proximity to the child that they did not hear it being mauled? How did you not wake up? Even if there was not a dog in the house there are SO many dangers that a child can get into. Outlets, toilets,, smothered in blankets, hung by various cords, toxic cleaning supplies.....the list is endless! And at night, you best have a monitor in their room with the receiver on high next to your bed so you know when they move or if they wake!
I also have to say it is CRAZY to have an untrustworthy animal around an unsupervised child. The UNSUPERVISED part should NEVER have occurred.
This is so heartbreaking I could weep all over my keyboard. Everyday you hear of young kids dieing from the stupidity of those who should have protected them
