Yes, the French were fighting then at that point which was good, The British had there backs against the Wall at the Battle of Dunkirk, But it was the 100,s of civilian boats and fishing boats which came from the British ports along the south coast of England to ferry the Soldiers off the Beaches, they came over the English channel in droves despite being Strafed and Bombed by the German Planes, They ferried the Soldiers to the waiting Battle Ships which of course could not reach them Then the tide turned after regrouping and it was the 10th May 1940 that Winston Churchill became Prime Minister of England .he was a Master tactician, Soon afterwards when the Germans were marching towards Paris the French gave up the fight ,Churchill pleaded with them to fight on but they would not
Except for the French under ground who did a great job Those brave people were made of a different substance than the Powers ruling France then
However that is over and done with, Nothing can change what was and i hope there is no arguments on this thread regards that
Just one other incident i can recall when i was in Belgium in the late 1980's,we were on a pigeon tour and on the way home the Courier of the Coach said we would stop in a Wine Store near Calais the Wine was cheaper there, anyhow we were in there and it a Sunday morning The French Women were buying this Wine as well I was browsing the shelves when i was pushed out of the way by about 4 or 5 French Ladies, one grabbed my Shirt and i finished up without any buttons on it it was hanging on off my back when i got out, They thought i had been mugged when i got back to the coach some had bits of skin off there heels and bruises and none were impressed by the way the people conducted themselves in fact very few bought any Wine at all they wanted to get out of it
Had they been Guys i would have Panned then down there and then where they stood, but they were Women so nothing i could do but give way gracefully , I never went inside such a place again

Doghandler
I did think of giving them French Ladies my Shirt as a momento what was left of it so that they would then remember the day,
But as my Case was in the Luggage Bay of the Coach it would have been difficult to get another Shirt, i could hardly walk through Customs stripped to the waist when we got there, It may not have gone down too well
I could imagine the Headlines, A Brit who thinks he is Tarzan, some hope
