I've always had a dog. When I was very small we had a mutt, Bootsie about the size of a beagle but long haired. She had the run the neighborhood and everyone fed her (one day she came home carrying a 3lb coffee can full of bacon grease. She thought she had found the mother lode). She was very fat and preferred to sleep in the middle of the street in front of our house. Small town living back in the day! Folks knew her and just drove around her. I find it funny that she slept there especially because she used to chase cars until my dad caught her and whipped her with his belt all the way back to the house just like he did us kids when we got out of line. She never chased another car but she still insisted on her place in the sun. Then we moved to the country and she had rabbits to chase and no neighbors to feed her so she slimmed down and enjoyed the country life.
My uncle had a black and silver GSD, Butch who had an old injury that prevented him from putting his weight on one of his front feet so he always had it tucked up under his chest. He would chase my uncle's car to grandma's house a mile down the road. My uncle would let him ride back on the trunk of his car. How he managed to get up there and not fall off is beyond me. My grandpa didn't like Butch because he would chase rabbits into the rock fence and tear the fence apart to get the rabbit. Butch would pick up large limestone rocks and toss them over his shoulder. Very impressive. Butch got to my grandpa's border collie bitch one heat and there where 13 pups. Enough for each grandchild with some left over. Those pups were my favorite dogs. So smart, so loyal and sooo very protective.
Years later, after I read Lad A Dog, I had to have me a collie. So we ended up with 5. Then I didn't have any dog for a long time. My husband and I decided when we bought our house and got the yard fenced we would wait a year and get a dog. We argued about what breed as we were going to get just one. I wanted my collie, he wanted his GSD. I finally relented because...now get this...he convinced me that he refused to have to deal with all that hair. Sneaky bugger! He didn't bother to tell me that you spell GSD "H.A.I.R.!!" I got over being pissed because I fell in love with our old girl Airin and now Echo. I won't feed anything else now. He converted me, hair and all.

I love all the stories! I wanted to add that we only had one dog growning up - my uncle bred boxers and my father brought one home over my mom's objections. When he left and took the dog, we cried more over the dog than for my father. After getting married, the first thing we did was get a puppy! My kids are already quite certain that German shepherds are the best dogs to have!

Like DebiSue, I had a longing for a collie after reading the Albert Payson Terhune stories, I had an American pen pal (we all did at my school, some kind of hands across the sea project) when I was about 8 who sent me a copy of "The Heart of a Dog" , I atill have it to this day.

My dad was a dog nut. The poor man was drafted and sent to Korea, where he was introduced to Japanese, pizza, and gsds. He fell in love with the gsds and pizza. :-)
My mother hated dogs-period. So, my first dog (at age 4) was a beagle that I named Bambi.
I begged for a collie for eons and for Valentine's Day when I was 8, I got a gsd puppy. I was disappointed that it was not a collie...for about 5 minutes. That dog literally saved my life twice by the time I was ten

My Stepfather, Older brother , and Mother were members of the GSD Klub of Berlin.
I was a member until I graduated high school and moved to my Uncles house in
Belgium. My uncle was NVBK and help me learn to train until I met Bart Bellon.
And than I switched to training Ring dogs. But you could starve trainig ring dogs,
but do very well training GSDs in Schutzhund. So I did both. I stop counting the nationals
I had won , but I have 6 world titles two with the same dog, and 4 with other dogs. 3 of these
dogs I did not own. I moved to The USA 1986 and started training there. Made good money
so I train about 7 months a year now. I love dogs, and 100 diferent breeds. My mother is
French, and my Stepfather Is German. My older brother thinks I have defected from the GSD,
but not so. I hope he never comes on this forum, he know to much about me. My stepfather's
last name will show up in most of those library books you check out on the GSD.
