Firstly once the deed is done by the Dog it has to be punished as soon as he did it and he was not.
So i am afraid it is too late to punish the dog afterwards because he will not know why it is being done, Better to keep them apart at meal times, Dogs are not so predictable as we think they are, and good job they are not

Exactly right, Steve, you have to be instantaneous.

Steve1- OK what sort of punishment should I follow if he repeats it.

That depends on you and how your dog is with you, If it happened when i was there and he did it i would grab him by his collar or back of the Neck and give him a good but very quick shake and drop him saying NO, in a real sharp voice, or whatever word you use, You cannot go hitting the Dog or anything but it has to be done very quick and once only
Yesterday i had my Loft Coat on and Izzy was in the Garden running round looking for everything to pick up
She thought i had a Ball in my pocket and she was worrying it to get it, there was nothing in there, She got higher and higher i gave her a smack on the nose with the flat of my hand as her mouth touched the pocket she came back again i grabbed her by her neck both hands and lifted her off the ground and shook her she squealled, and i dropped her, She got the message and ran a few paces to grab something else
Only Playing but she was getting a little too boisterous.
It is as we say Trying it on and they will test you at times
After i sat on a Stool and she came and laid underneath my legs as if to say what was that about

I agree, all corrections, regardless of why, must be instantaneous and also you can't ever get emotional about it, you must be dead calm, & once the correction is over, it's over, nothing personal.

For me, I like to leave a dog and his meal alone, so I feed them outside and each in their separate run areas.

Sue
thats the way i do it a Dog should have his own space to eat that is there right, and one correction only Never a second one phiscally or verbally make the first one count or not at all I wish people would do that instead od saying it four or five toimes and getting no response, My brother gave a soft verbal correction to Goran at training this Morning you could here me giving him a Boll---king The other side of Zolder where were training, I really let rip and it was instant

for dogs that are food aggressive towards humans we gain dominion over the bowl by teaching them to move away from the bowl on command  to their place and correct them if they do not comply with the command as opposed trying to correct the growling  if you were going to attempt to correct it ideally you would correct it when the dog was thinking about doing it because its  usually its preceded by a look, albeit I don't know how you would go about that I certainly don't believe in making the dog think its being attacked by me so that it ran in terror when I yelled it would just stress them out   We do it with  the handler is at a distance not standing around sticking their hands in the bowl I wonder how some people would react of they  went to eat and someone stood around with their hand in your food or manhandling you,I pretty sure most people would say ''get the %$&*# off me and let me eat in peace''

Lief
In 60 years of keeping various breeds of Dogs i have never once had that problem, Every dog i have ever owned was as a Puppy and every Puppy is fed only from my hands for the first two weeks then i cut it back to once a week or so but every day when the dogs are eating i put my hand into the bowl when they have there head in eating and take a bit out but right away give it back from my hand
I do it this way Most Dogs are crazy for food and by doing this i create a Bond, and i will say i have never had one dog growl or warn me off they just wag there tail it is a part of them and how they are treated
The New Pup is with me now just under 9 weeks old, Today i gave it food from my hand it did not eat over much being new but tomorrow it will eat no problem and it will come to me for its food within three days Hopefully to morrow i can take some Pic's of the new Pup Her name is Gina

Hi Steve never say never, and I'm not talking about my own dogs I am talking about training dogs we take in trust me there is a lot of that going on out the Chows Rotts even Dalmations do it not to mention these mutts people get from the pound do a youtube search its extremly common  I specialze in aggressive behavior so we get a lot of Vet referrals on adult dogs who have permenace of habit regardless I'm not going to get into some argument with you about I will just you guys are right I am wrong and let it go at that   here is classic example

by VomMarischal on 20 May 2010 - 21:05

To me that looks like a classic example of teasing a dog. I'm guessing that's not what I'm supposed to see, though...what AM I seeing, Leif?
