Jackal73

Sorry steve1, but your wisdom is in question.  Deutsch ist meine Mutterzunge (German is my native language, for those who don't speak it).  Jaecar may be some sort of obscure variant, but I've certainly never heard of it.  Hunter is "Jaeger", from "Jagd" the hunt (noun), "Jagen", to hunt (verb).  Here is the wikipedia link in English, and a German online dictionary defintion for Jaeger.

Edited to add: I've done a bit of digging and Jaecar turns up as an ostensible German baby name meaning hunter for a full page of links.  So far as I can tell, though, it all traces back to one source, probably where someone made a typo.  No German dictionary that I can find online shows it as an archaic German word.  Ah well, as long as the owner likes it it doesn't matter much, does it?  The dog certainly doesn't care!

It is  probably from Old High German.

Origin:

German Language - Old High German dates back to 8th Century and is similar in many respects to Anglo-Saxon

Bee Tree,
I think you win the car. A Jaecar was like a Deer hunter who would
hunt for a living. In Germany there were only a few thing you could do,
Pottery or brick making, stock animals, metal working so,on and so on.
A Jaecar hunted deer for venison meat and would sale it, also wild pigs.
But you get the idea, the hundsman worked and trained dogs. I think
they were called Jon's.

I didn't want this to start an argument :-((
I do appreciate the digging and hunting (no pun intended) everyone did to help me figure this out... and HAHAHHA about FART... Yeah that one takes the cake for sure!!!
I have always liked the name Jaegar, but find it very common and so I want something a bit different, so I just assumed it was some variant of the name that had been changed the way Americans have to change simple names from Jessica, to Jesika, Jessikka, Jessicca....etc.... Or that it was just an old no longer used name/word...
Well thanks again and sorry to have started a debate. There's enough going on here now for me to want to start any  trouble
Hugs for you all
Stacy

*Edit to add Jackal was another name I was considering :-)

Stacy, you silly, this is the kind of debate we love! No harm, no foul.... Jon Luc is a big boy, he can handle what he dishes!

I think Jon Luc gave a description that is very correct, to tell the truth. Makes absolute sense. Actually he is very sensible, just sometimeS incomprehensible. But that could just be me. .... I can live with it! lol

No argument as far as I'm concerned, just vigorous discussion!  :D

And as much as I like jackals (obviously, because I use the name) I'm not sure you would want to use it for a dog.  I've noticed that people seem to have a negative opinion of jackals -- they think they're dirty and sneaky and nasty.  This doesn't make much sense to me since, they're scavengers yes, but also capable hunters, and generally very resourceful.  All the same, you might not want people to have a negative opinion of your dog just because of his name.

Well, you watched OMEN, didn't you? LOL  I remember watching that the for the first time in the 70's..... scared the SH*T out of me, my little sister and her BF, yeah I was "chapareone" LOL!

I happen to know a Dutch Shepherd named Jackal. He is a dirty, sneaky, nasty SOB. He likes to put his handlers in the hospital. Apptly named, I thought.
