Need help with Dog Kennel - Page 3

For 60 years i have used Concrete and with no bad effects on any dog But i will say this you will need a double skin of concrete with a damp membrane in between you do not want rising damp to come up otherwise no matter what the weather it will be damp and never dry out
Plus i wash it out every day and disinfect it three times a week with a dettol solution

well, I am about 65% done.... It has been A TON of work, but it is turning out exactly as I planned! I decided on drain rock dug down about a foot, covered with weed screen, covered with pea gravel. I also built a 8X4 deck for them to lay on. Next is to build the dog houses inside, and enclose 1/2 of the shelter. I plan on staining the wood when I am done,  then its the roof and gutters. I ordered a 90% Sun screen tarp for this summer also.

I too an putting up new kennels...

I have two 10x20 and a 12x12. I am actually doing something similiar to Guru. I am adding drainage tile embedded in gravel, then soil screen and then pea stone. I am then going to cover the two 10x20 kennels and the 12x12 with a slightly sloping shingled roof. I was looking for something easier to clean up and sanitize. Mud is a big thing... I am in Michigan. ewww... I am hoping that the roof helps a little...

I am going to use galvanized corrugated roofing, it will work better at directing the water where I want it to go (into the gutters, and drain off into my pond) .

All that work, just to end up having her  live with you in the house.

hehehehehehehe.... Maybe! We will use it anyway to keep them seperated, and when I am not home. I like that they are in their kennel if I have company, or a BBQ.... No dogs at our feet! LOL

Dang -- looks good !   Can I borrow you ?    I just had 3 sides of Black Vinyl-Coated 1-1/4" Mesh Chain Link installed -- 18 ft deep x 24 ft wide x 6 ft tall (the back is 6 ft wood fence).  I hope he doesn't "eat through it", as it isn't as strong as the all galvanized steel.   I did have them install it with all the posts, bolts, ties placed on the outside (all smooth inside so he cannot hurt his feet when he jumps up on the fence).  

Did you dig down a foot over the entire area?   Mine is on a slight slope for draining, but is still muddy where he runs along the fence.   I am not having an enclosure built, as I bring him in at night....he does have a Dogloo in the enclosure.   I, too, bought a sun shade tarp, but could not find any that is 90% -- mine is just 70%; however, I did buy two 10 ft x 18 ft, so I may just double them......anyway, your kennel looks very nice !

I have a solution for you MaggieMae, if you look BEHIND Ruger on the fencing, you will see 4x4 livestock fencing. I thought I would reinforce the wood fence so they could not pull or push it or chew it, I used wood staples to tack it to the fence.
Yes I dug the ENTIRE area down to make sure no mud came up. I also found a link to the company I purchased the shade tarp from, if anyone needs one. They are very reasonable and will make custom sizes. I also bought a roll of indoor/outdoor carpet that I am going to cover the decking with tomorrow.

I will for sure post pictures, however keep in mind mine is NOT the best out there, but it came from my head. I am using allot of reclaimed wood (some new), and the fence pannels I got from Craigslist for less than $100.00 but I spent allot to get into working order. I am buying my roofing used - 2'6"X13' for $5.00 each. I also have to get a roll of chain link to re do the fencing because it is not perfect, and I want thicker guage in the front.
I did not hire a professional to get me the design so I will be taking my chances on how it works. The good news is that Ruger has been in there durring the day for 2 days with NO problems.
