BE, what does being a "police dog" have to do with it????  You're assuming a lot.  If the dog mauled these kids, I would agree whole-heartedly but  it seems to me, something just isn't sitting right with the whole story.  A WITNESS saw the dog wagging his tail and not acting aggressive, one of the "children", drove away and hasn't been seen since.  These were not babes in prams who were eaten by the big bad wolf, they were on property where they had no permission to be and just the fact that they had a knife, IMO, "innocence" is the last description I'd use.  Just because he's a police dog, doesn't make him dangerous to children or viscous in general.

Yes, we should reserve final judgement for later. BUT!!!  The FACT that this dog has never bitten anyone!!! Even in the line of duty, bodes foul play!
In my opinion those folks who think the boys were shooting the dog WHILE HE WAS IN HIS PEN, makes the most sence to me. The dog who had never gotten out before OR showed agression to children suddenly climbs out and attacks them? For no reason???? Come on wake up!! Use your brains not your emotions!!!!!!!!!

Agree that not all Police Dogs are well trained or have the ability to judge a situation correctly.  But it's near impossible to question any and all Police Dog situations.
"Not all police dogs have the ability to make a judgement call between kids having fun with guns, and real criminals with guns. " - It would be very difficult to teach any dog to make such a  judgment.  A gun is a gun is a gun.  A dog trained to protect against such weapon will do so no matter who is holding it.

djc,
Yes, I forgot about that when I read the story, that the dog had never apprehended..even didn't want to bite during such.  It appeares that maybe this Police Serive Dog was not trained for apprehension?  That does play a role in the dogs behavior at this particular scene.

So now people are criminals who have a frickin pocket knife ? Seems you assume Travels, not I.

Sooo, a loose police dog isn't out looking for a bite ? What is a police dog out looking for running at large unattended ? He prolly was waggin his tail because he didn't know what kid to grab first. Hows that for assuming. Field day huh ?

I'm glad no kids lost their life, eyes or too much blood.

The kids were not supposed to be there playing there ? Please, the police dog wasn't supposed to be running at large. period.

Just blame it all on the kids, the kids are to blame for the police dog biting, ohhh gezzzzzz. FI let all dogs run at large, hurt, maul, kill and cripple kids ... who cares huh, kids shouldn't be playing in open fields minding their own business, huh ? I guess the kids should just stand around and watch their friends being bitten by dog at large. WTF !!!!!

Talk about a phucked up society.

Steve, cub scouts train and get certificates to carry a pocket knife. Something my son was proud to get. I suppose you don't like the idea 16 year old children can rifle hunt. Or any age child can archery hunt ?

Have fun with it.

"Talk about a phucked up society."

Yest, it is because people like you don't teach your hell-spawn appropriate standards of behavior and either deny their little Johnny would ever do such a thing or dismiss it as 'boys being boys'.  On average, what do you think the ratio is of juveniles running wild and commiting crimes to police dogs escaping their enclosures and attacking people without provocation?  The law of probability clearly favors the former.

I always remember when my son was a toddler and another boy took his toy away then hit him.  His parents walked over and dad smacked his son saying "we don't hit other people".

Just like handlers are responsible for their dogs, parents are responsible for their children.  What you teach those who look to you for guidance, they carry with them out in the world.

I would love to know the whole story.
