I find it quite offensive for you to make comments such as i guess american's need protecting cause you are such a bad ass. Thats a croc of shit. Considering there is law enforcement on here, ex military, veterans, good ol boys with homes full of firearms etc.... that are more than capable of handling thereselves in most situations including myself however It frankly has nothing to do with needing protection in most cases. Its about ease of mind.
I own three protection trained dogs. one sport, one ppd, and one fpd.
When my ex and I lived together(w/ her 8 year old daughter) and I left for business or any reason. it made me feel more comfortable knowing they had a deterrent and 1st line of defense in case of something happening while i was away. Or when they would go on evening jogs or down to the park and such, I knew nothing would happen. Who abducts a child or rapes a woman that has a protection trained gsd with them?
I personally like the fact of having a ppd for a deterrent and backup in case the need arises. Some of us dont have the luxery of hunky dory lives with no crime or a**holes that want to do you or your property harm.
I never wish for my dogs to have to defend my home or my person. I really dont. But if the need arises then i expect them to do there job as a family member and protect what is ours. No different than i would expect from myself.
Quite frankly its the unprepaired people who get taken advantage of so if you say im weak for owning ppd dogs then so be it.

been down that road too. Even though I have a carry conceal in NC I cant get one or transfer it to maryland. So there are multiple in the home but I cant carry one on my person in public, however my dogs can go. haha.
For now encourage him and let him win only when he puts forth that little extra bit of effort, encourage that.
I can still tell my dog no and he better be looking me in the eye when I do. Your in charge.
Be patient, don't rush.
why would an 11 week old puppy be hearing no for any reason?
I believe in bonding even more, you and your family, he must adopt you as his.
he must adopt you as his. what does that mean? Why does he need to own you?
the bond will come through training and proper raising. puppy hood is about direction
and motivation.
I would trust a dog that loved me over a dog trained with a shock collar every time.
number one its not a freaking shock collar its an ecollar. why cant a dog be your partner and be
trained using an ecollar?(considering 1000's are) a dog that loves you without proper training isn't
going to be reliable! training should build/increase the bond not decrease it.
They have their purpose and its very limited in my opinion, also far too easy to abuse.
easy to abuse yes.limited absolutely not!!!!!!!!!!!!!! they have endless applications in the right hands!!!!!!!

I guess you are referring to me in your post, If so Son you are jumping the Gun i was referring to the poster Clint and there is nothing offensive in my post at all, I simply ask why does anyone need a Dog to protect them.
I too train Dogs in the sport of ScHh and have trained different breeds of Dogs to do different jobs during my 60 years of owing them but for me i only trained Collies for Competitions with Sheep but that is what i wanted them for, I do not need a Dog to protect me never given it a thought as to why any normal house hold would want one to protect them,
and i do not know anyone over here who has a Dog specially trained by them to protect them against any other human, nothing big in that it just does not happen,
Nothing offensive about that just that you are a touchy young fellow it seems
Again i live in a different part of the World and we here a lot of what you Guys do and have in the USA not that much notice is taken by most for instance it seems many people over there have a therapist, We do not have them over here or in the UK
I am not saying anything of what you have is wrong it cannot be so if it suits the individual What i am saying is that i find it strange well the need to have so to speak and there is nothing offensive in asking that, just inquisitive and even at my age i still get inquisitive

Maybe i misinterpreted what you meant. If so then exclude my previous comment.
In our society, IMHO there is most definitely a reason for having a means to defend yourself and your property. Whether that be a dog, firearm, etc.... a fluttering economy, insufficient raising of children(leads to crime), and already high voilent crime rates makes a person be prepared for the day when they could become a victim. Hence portection dogs, firearms, security systems, etc... Like I say, i hope the day never comes. But if it does i dont want to be another helpless civilian and im sure many others feel the same way. So its about every member of the house hold being prepared.
Not to knock the police, but they cant be everywhere all the time. If so we would have no crime. its also most definitely not there fault. considering my three surrounding counties have cut hiring, cut overtime, extra program budget cuts, it limits there capabilities that much more. So it makes these times that much more dangerous.
My dogs will do there job to protect our home and each other just i would do for them or our home.

You and I will have to disagree on many things it seems.
We do not see our animals in the same light.
The worlds full of fools and idiots who can ruin a good dog.
The worlds also full of fools and idiots who are not afraid of our dogs and will kill one at their convenience.
A dog cannot replace your own abilities to protect anything.
Best keep your guns and hope you never have to use one. Avoiding trouble is more important than how you plan on dealing with it, all good plans go to hell in a hurry when your not the one in control.
You go ahead and shock all the dogs you want, thats not good training in my opinion..
Yeah it's still called a shock collar.
I've used them.
You raise your puppies your way and I'll raise mine my way.

Unfortunately i have had to use my weapons before and will again if need be. Considering I'm a veteran( deployed to afganistan twice) I think preparation is more important considering you cant always avoid trouble. When the s*** hits the fan would you rather be unprepaired or prepair to deal with it. Personally i would rather live than die because i wasnt prepaired.
it may be your opinion and your entitled to it. but don't use your ignorance of the use of an ecollar as a crutch for how barbaric and inhumane they are and how the rest of us are horrible for using them as they are another effective tool in the tools box for many trainers that consistently produce top dogs for many venues.
I also would like for you to maybe enlighten the rest of with why you feel it is poor training to use this tool and how you have seen them used and by whom?

by Two Moons on 22 January 2010 - 23:01
It's a little different in the real world especially if your family is in the middle of it, so you be prepared.
You seem to want to put words in my mouth, I didn't use the words barbaric, inhumane, or crutch.
Maybe those words are in your mind, but I never used them.
I don't really care to enlighten you.
I believe your mind is made up already and I won't waste my time on it.
Yes it's a tool with a purpose, and not for those who have no sense.
A lazy mans tool.
We are not going to have a meeting of the minds.
