GSD. American...faded pigment...but GSD.

by SkipShift on 08 December 2009 - 16:12

Wow thank you guys for the quick responses, and wonderful comments on my dog.  The main reason we thought she was a Malinois was because of her coloring, black tips on fur, small size and no stereotypical German slope.  I was told the reason for no slope was because there was a difference between German bred and American bred Shepherds.  Not sure if it is true though.  Her temperment seems to fit a Malinois as well, but I just found out about Malinois yesterday so I could not know what I am talking about!

The story on her is a friend of  a friend had two German Shepherds (I only saw a clear view of one of her parents the other it was too dark outside) from what I could make out, the dad looked all German Shepherd to me and pretty big sized.  The mother, all I could see really was her outline and a faint view of her coloring.  From what I could tell, her mother didnt look nearly as light as my dog, nor could I tell if she really was a German Shepherd.  However, when I first got her she was completely dark. (I'll post more pics and some videos.)

I felt bad because the friend of a friend whos dogs had the puppies made me feel bad by saying the dogs they couldnt get rid of they would take to the shelters where they would euthanize them. (not sure what would have happened but I didnt want it to happen to any of them)  They said since one of the parents was papered, the girls were $350 and boys were $250 or $300 I forget.  I talked her down to either $200-$250 for mine, I named her Dolce. (Italian for sweet since the day I got her thats what she has been)

Heres more pics and videos for you to further confirm, shes just over two years old now and no I do not have her papered.  Thank you all so very much again for your time I love hearing more about what she really is! Sorry this is so long!

My silver back male was not of pure blood, but he was all GSD.
He did look similar to yours as a pup.

Most definitely a german shepherd, not a mix.  What a sweet, sweet girl.  Dolce is the perfect name for her.  Loved the videos too.   Enjoy her as I am sure you already do!

Yes, skipshift, they do look alot alike.  That's why I had to post the pics.  I would say your girl is a GSD that just lacks pigment.  I've heard that it is a recessive gene that makes that washed out, faded/lack of pigment.
Can anybody comment on that?  Is it a recessive?
Just enjoy your dog, give her a great life with training and you will both be happy!  My girl lived to 13.5 years old.  I bought her for $200 w/no papers so I didn't know s*** about her.    I took her to classes.  Basic OB then off leash then PP.  I loved that dog!
Good luck with yours skip.
