Liesjers

by Liesjers on 29 September 2009 - 18:09

My experience has been the same as Sueincc.  I teach a new behavior with food.  Once the dog understands, then we use a ball or tug.  He's way more driven for a ball or tug than food, but using those right away takes too much time.  Food helps keep the drive level manageble and allows me to lure more precision.  Toys add speed and drive.  Also, I sometimes train at an all-breed club which meets indoors in a rather small building.  I can't use my ball and tug indoors because there's not enough room and all the other dogs go crazy, so I use treats in this environment.  I also need bait for tracking.  I don't know anyone that has trained tracking with zero food (and I do use a ball reward at the end).

If I have no treat and my dog won't do something, it's not because there is no treat it's because he doesn't understand what I'm asking him to do.

Well said.
But don't forget to mention corrections.

Red Leg,
At three months you should start working on getting and keeping the pups attention and teaching a few very basic things using rewards.
At six months I start my pups on a long line using one of Koehlers methods.
Rewards, corrections, praise, they all have a place in training.

Redlegs - at 3 months - your puppy could be doing so much...get to training..

...I usually use reward - but I like the term bait better at the moment... regards of the word you use.........

it teaches a habit and doesn't cause conflict at a young age...

Tristate - what do you use in training a pup? take in mind this thread is about treat....... just curious...

Happyday
