Krazy Bout K9s

by Krazy Bout K9s on 25 July 2009 - 14:07

DebiSue,
I like you more every day...LOL.

.I sure wish I had the gift of words that you and Crys do...I just kinda tell it like it is, short and breif and to the point...I need to learn how to sugar coat it some or explain myself better, I know what I am trying to say, just can't get the words out right...you 2 are wonderful....
Take care, Steph
I am off for the day to try my hand at riding side saddle for a re-enactment for our founding city father Marcus Daly....Marcus Daly Days, will post a pic later for some fun...

Whoa Nellie!  Side saddle?  Yes, do post some pics!  I never had the nerve to try that.  Afraid I would fall on my noggin!

Don't worry about sugar coating your words either.  Sometimes it's best just blurted out.  If you're worried about hurting someone else's feelings you're not worried about your own.  Sometimes ya gotta get their attention to make a point.  Crys will do just fine.  Sooner or later she's gonna find her own two feet and stand up to MIL.  Sometimes, as with us Steph, it comes with (gasp) age.

Speaking of pics...Crys...more of Oakley would be cool.

Okay, okay...I'll get some more pics of Oakie!!!

I love taking pics...It's been so hot that I have been spending a lot of time out of doors watering and weeding, and I don't usually have my camera out with me.  And indoors...Well, my house is a bit messy right now, and I don't think I want to post messy pics on the internet...

Anyway, I'll get some more pics of Oakley and get them up here...I do so love taking pics of her, though I wish I could post some of the cute ones of her with the kids, but after that last paleputz episode, I'm not posting anymore pics that show kids or adults in them...Too many freaks out there.  Pity, though, there are some really cool ones...Ah, well, what can we do?

As for the mother in law, I try to be diplomatic with everyone...I've been very good at writing and speaking for a long time, wrote and spoke at college level by the time I was eleven.  But being good at English doesn't prepare one for dealing with a moody mother in law...We're all facing economic crises of one type or another, and that's what's behind her problem, I imagine.  She's very set in her ways, and I don't think she'll ever change...Not at nearly seventy years old.  The bad thing is that we live right next door to her...Sometimes I wish we lived a couple states away!

I'll post again later...She's back, after being gone for a week, and in fine form again!!

Annie looks great!  It is amazing when one sense is gone, how the other senses kick into high gear to make up for the deficiency.  I'm thinking that a lack of sight will make her an even better companion.  Thanks for keeping us updated!

by CrysBuck25 on 27 July 2009 - 17:07

Hi All,

I promised more, here are a couple more.  The first one is of Oakley tracking the scent of Misty, our other dog.  She tracks me even better, but it's hard for me to get pics of her tracking me, because she's always coming straight at me.

The second one is for Steph, (Montana GSD Rescue)...Oakley still loves her 'baby' that she came with.  It's a little worse for wear, but she still has it.

I'm on my way out to do some watering, feed chickens, and play for a bit.  I'll get some more pics when I get my camera back from my husband this afternoon.

Going to take Oakley up to a job site where we are getting firewood to sell...More good exposure for her, and socialization with a couple of nice dogs, and their people.  So far, we have had absolutely no trouble with Oakley in socialization...But if another dog growls and barks at her, she will bark back, like a couple of nights back, when we went on our walk.  She doesn't tuck and run; she stands her ground, barking back.

Oakley loves to go for rides, but she can be left alone without her going all bananas on me, which is good.  Loud sounds don't bother her, though she did get a bit confused on the Fourth of July, with all the noise and the smell.  She wasn't scared, anyway, just a bit confused for a short while, then she didn't react anymore.

What a dog...That's all I can say about her.  I am forever grateful that I have her with me...Very special friend.  The other night, I was having a bad time, a bit upset, and I went outside and sat in the grass at the edge of the yard, just watching the stars.  In a couple of minutes, Oakley, who was outside with me, but lying on the porch up to that point, came over and sat beside her, her head leaned on my arm...A friend, even at the exuberant age of almost fifteen weeks old.

Thanks for the pics!  She is looking good!  Funny about the "baby".  She sure looks like she is enjoying it.  Echo destroyed her first toy (a sock monkey with squeaker)so I replaced it then hid it.  She knows where it's kept and every once in a while I will let her play with it.  As soon as I see the prey drive kick in I take it away.  She is slowly learning that if she tries to tear it up I will take it away.  I can say Ah-Ah now and she will stop.  She has very few toys anymore because she loves to destroy them.  She either wants to disembowl it or play tug with it.  Either way, she has ruined more new toys before you can shake a stick at.  My husband is getting irritated by the expense and gets grumpy when I buy a new one because he knows it will be in the trash in oh, maybe 10 minutes depending on the toy.  But she has sooooo much fun when I can give her something new.  Her most recent toy, a canvas cat with squeaker has lasted longer than any that I haven't taken away.

Oakley sounds like a real sweetie.  Nice that she can comfort you, she knows when you are down.  I am so glad you got her too.  She is where she belongs.  I'm still jealous. :-)

I got Oakley a hard rubber tug ring toy, that is supposed to be nearly indestructible, but I only let her have it in the house, since Misty would gladly go and hide it so Oakie can't find it anymore.  Wonder if I should chain it to a post in the middle of the yard, so it can't wander off?

I don't spend much on doggy toys, but I do always try to make sure that they have things to chew on, because despite my MILs assertion, dogs will continue to chew throughout their lives, not just when they are teething, and it is possible to redirect inappropriate chewing onto things that are okay.  I can get a steady supply of cow knuckles and long bones as trim from a butcher we are friends with, and that will give them all the chewing they can stand...Question then will be, can I stand picking up all the bones when it's time to mow?

Not so bad, I guess.  And the savings on dogs not getting into trash cans, chewing up shoes left outside by kids, shoes left inside, but out of the plastic tub they are supposed to be in, clothes, and anything else, including furniture, is immense.  Of course, the really gooey bones are outside chewies only...I don't want or need the smell of rotting meat, and the bloodstains/greasestains on my carpet and laminate, left by a bone dragged all around the house by a puppy.  Kong rules!

I'd better get my buns to work, not getting anything done with kids, dogs, or yard sitting here.  I'll be back on later!

And I forgot to introduce everyone to the yellow jacket that landed on our pickup window in central Montana, the day we picked Oakley up, and rode all the way to the Idaho border before finally being dislodged (keep in mind we were traveling 70 miles per hour).

Yellow jacket...ewwww!  I'm afraid I would have dislodged it long before that!

As for chewing on no-no's, invest in some bitter apple spray and tabasco sauce.  I've used both to get Echo's attention.  I'm not sure how easy it will be to stop Oakley since she can't see and her mouth tells her a lot.  I guess it could prove easier because once she tastes it, she most likely will avoid it simply by sense of smell.  It's not like it's in her line of vision teasing her.

Echo is really pretty good about leaving the no-no's alone.  Once I make it clear that she isn't to mess with it she leaves it alone so she has done very little damage so far.  She sings to me in the morning because that's when she gets the kong filled with peanut butter from the freezer.  I play a switcheroo with her by picking up the empty and washing it out then refilling it.  The minute she smells the PB she is underfoot and talking up a storm.  I then put it in the freezer for tomorrow and pull out the frozen one and give it to her.

We gave her a beef knuckle bone once then ended up throwing it away because we didn't want it laying around the yard and most definitely not in the house.  My husband worked with a vet once who told him the little benefit the dog might get from a bone does not outweigh the damage that a bone can do.  It's something stuck in his brain so he just won't agree to giving Echo a bone again.   He's a bigger worry wart than I am!

Get to work!

Deb,

Oakley is really good about not chewing on things she shouldn't, for the most part, anyway.  She gets her bones and her chew toys first, most of the time.  The rest of the time, I wonder if the reason that she chews things isn't because our other dog, Misty, was chewing on it first...For the most part, I'm pretty sure that's true.

If I catch her with something she's not supposed to have, then I correct her (No, Drop it), and give her the nearest okay thing to chew on, and that's worked really well for me.  She's actually quite bright, despite my MIL's assertion that she's retarded because she doesn't jump and run when yelled at.

Stay is coming along nicely.  Oakley's getting a pretty good handle on what it means, but distance stuff is going to have to wait, because at this point it still needs lots of hands on work.

Thanks for the pics Crys,
That toy Oakie has had the name "flea" on the front of it...
It is so nice to see her growing up to be such a lady...she has such a pretty face...
It is storming here again, so inside work it is...tonight...

DebiSue, I get stuffed toys at the Goodwill for about a buck a piece, sometimes even 25 cents...then it doesn't matter if they destroy it or not...but Kong's do rule...lol...
