So sorry to hear such rotten news for both of you.

I'm really  sorry.  I know you know this takes nothing away from him as far as being a great dog.  He should be able to live a long and normal life with mild dysplasia.  Thankfully, we know so much more these days, there is a lot of good info, and medical management advances,  as far as keeping them pain free and happy.

Sunsilver, you have my deepest sympathies. I went through a similar thing with my Isis. I purchased her for my foundation bitch and my very first Schutzhund prospect. Everyone in the club loved her movement, temperment, and tenacity. She was hell on wheels but the best dog to train. She is also beautiful. My male (excellent OFAs and good working lineage) loved her from the first moment. They were a great compliment to each other. I took her in for her 2 year OFAs (I wanted to breed and continue in Schutzhund).  I was stunned when the vet came out and told me the bad news, he was so shocked with the x-rays, he did them again because Isis shows nothing in her gate or movement. She has NO left hip, her pelvis is totally smooth, no indent, nothing. Her ball is deformed and shows extreme arthritic changes, I won't bore you all with the rest of the deformities. I was a wreck when the vet told me that she was born this way and had probably been in pain from the day she was born (that killed me) and will only get worse arthritis and pain (we have minimized the degeneration and pain as much as possible). I spayed her the following week and cried for days thinking about her pain (she is the sweetest girl). It is hard on her not to work like she used to (every weekend and many days during the week for 2 years). I think that is the hardest part, knowing she is in physical pain, but also in emotional pain from the curtailed activities. My heart goes out to you and your girl.

Aren't our dogs just the bravest creatures? Despite what must be awful pain, they look at us with happy, loving eyes, & are always still willing to try their best for us. jackie harris
