I have been looking for a no grain puppy food. I am using the missing link until it is gone. Hopefully the flea thing is really the problem. I give her marrow bones and that is as raw as we go. I have to say that I am not comfortable with the raw diet at this time only because I know nothing about it. My vet says no on raw but that is just his opinion and am looking to make sure he is the right vet for Athena. Most of the dogs around here are hunting dogs not gsd.

Fleas can be a problem, especially indoors.
I use Frontline but to kill everything at once I use a kennel dip.
If they make a home of your house you will really have problems.

The wheat was just wondering about allergies, but if you've seen fleas I believe you've found your problem.

Mum of Zoe

After some time of having a very itchy and miserable girl, not to mention her coat looking awful, we deducted that she was allergic to the seafood ingredients (salmon oil, oceanfish meal, etc) that are standard in many dog foods, including premium brands.  We've switched her to Natural Balance's Venison and Sweet Potato, which uses flax seed oil instead of fish oil for Omega 3's, and almost overnight her scratching was reduced. She's now a healthy looking dog who's keeping on the weight she's gained, no itchies, using K9 Advantix for flea control, and we also treat our yard for cootie bugs, since she goes out in the back to play for a couple hours each night.

You might have better luck rotating your flea/pest treatments for the dogs, as fleas can develop a resistance to certain chemicals.  One year they might be resistant to Advantage, another year to Frontline, another year to whatever.

I put the last of the vectra on her last night and she seems to be less itchy.
Now if someone has any ideas how to get rid of our 110 degree days we are having here we would all be grateful!!!!!
