"why does that matter if her sire and dam (and grandparents) are clear of known genetic defaults of the German Shepherd Breed?"

With all due respect, if this is not a faceitious question, I would highly suggest you do some more research on genetics and modes of inheritance before you breed again.  I mean that in the gentlest and kindest way possible as it seems that you are pretty sensitive on the issue as to whether you have enough knowledge to go about breeding the right way.  Good luck with your litter, your girl is cute :-)

Your dog is doing what GSDs were originally intended to do--work and be part of the family (not get titles for sport and live in kennels).

Oh Good!!

I was sort of  feeling inadequate because my  Kaiser sleeps in my bed - and one of his jobs is to keep the squirrels out of the bird-feeder that his daddy taught him which is comical at times because he takes it very seriously!

Another job of his is to allow no one entrance to the back ( or front ) of my SUV when I open the back to put bags in or out when it's dark at night-just his mere precense has people all veering away from the back of my truck!

So he is my companion-he works and he protects-and he LOVES his ball-stick-frisbee-anything that moves!
Aside from  intervals of play and walks on the beaches and in woods - don't get me wrong I wish there were a Schutzhund Club near me for fun and sport!!!

Rowdy,

You don't have to justify yourself to me.  But you do need to have thick skin to be on this site because we all have opnions and we like to share them.  I never said you were "horrible" for not knowing what you were breeding...I said I considered it irresponsible.  Sorry if what I think rubs you the wrong way.  Guess we'll just have to agree to disagree and let it go at that.  Nothing I say is going to make any difference anyway.

Hope all goes well with your litter, horses and life in general.

"there are few of us oldtimers left here whose "sport" dogs as you call them are producing SAR, therapy assist dogs"

DKiah, can you give me some breeder/kennel names? I'm not being sarcastic or challenging your statement. I really would like to know, so I can refer people looking for this type of GSD to the right people.

Susanandthe k9s,
Try the rescue groups, I get in all kinds of great dogs that would make SAR, agility, drug sniffing, service, or ranch dogs, as a matter of fact I have several in right now....lots of them have AKC papers too...

And I bet in about 6-12 months some of RowdyReiners pups will become available when they get to the puppy stage and their new owners don't know how to handle them....

Sorry but I agree with DebiSue...

BTW; Reiner, I have a couple of close up, Doc O'Lena and Smart Little Lena mares for sale...are you interested.,..they have awesome cutting/reining pedigrees...for your breeding program. PM me if you are...

Dogs and Horses are a bit different....Horses produce 1 animal in 12 months and Dogs can produce up to about 24 animals in 12 months....makes the ratio a bit scary for us rescue people out here....
Thanks. Stephanie

Rowdy R

Some of the people on this site are "holier then thou" and poo poo ever single person who wants to breed their dog........

Ignore them.

If your bitch has a working temperament, can work and has good hips and elbows, the only other thing I would consider is find some people who experienced in GSD's and ask them to give you their opinions. Find an AKC and a SV judged event not too far away and go up to the judge and ask if he would give an opinion..........

After putting some photos of a dog of mine on this board, and getting lambasted, comments like "well he'll be a good pet", and "nice face, but that's all" - OUCH, I drove 4 hours each way to get such an opinion.........

The Judge (SV) was very kind, I explained that I was just starting and needed some help and guidance. I let him see the dog's pedigree and handle the dog for as long as he wanted. He was great, he told me the goods and bads and what he thought would be good bloodline matches for my dog...........

BTW - Oh the judge was quite impressed and thought he would become a very good if not great stud........that he had plenty of drive and still had a temperament that would keep him from being trouble for anyone, that his pedigree was fabulous and his conformation was spot on - as long as he doesn't get too big. So now I stress out about how big he's getting.......He's just under 26" and still growing.......is gonna be close!

Take everything that these people say with a bolder of salt

Rowdy Reiner,

Take your bitch times every other bitch in the country that people want to breed times 4-12 puppies per bitch...even the good breeders sell their dogs and then the ones they sell to others get bred, and then those get bred and soon we have tons of dogs available...

As I have stated in a separate post...there are over 7,400 German Shepherds alone, on Petfinder.com , looking for homes, that is not including all the other rescue sites like adopt-a-pet and others...there are so many dogs out there right now and especially in this economy, people are giving their dogs up to rescue that they have had for 7 and 8 years because they cannot afford to feed them anymore...

Next week, I have to go get an 8 yr old,  a 2 yr old, another 7 yr old, one pregnant bitch that got it by some ranch dog, I have a 3 yr old that is a fear biter that the breeder won't take back because she is retired from breeding, that I am trying to fix, another 3 yr old working dog...the list goes on. I have a beautiful 7 month old black pup a breeder bred and the person gave up the dog at 4 months old because they couldn't handle it, I can't find the breeder, so they don't get their dog back...

I am doing this out of my own pocket and help with the adoption fees I charge...some people luckily want a rescue dog instead of buying another puppy from a breeder...I used to breed and show many years ago, and now I feel so bad for all the unwanted GSD's out there that I rescue them and try to find them a new home.

I have had to kill several dogs that were unrepairable, that really hurts me. I even had a breeder contact me to help her place one of her dogs she didn't want to take back....I am sorry for venting but there are sooooo many good dogs out there that need homes and just look at all the ads on this website alone for upcoming litters and puppies available...
So that is my story and I am sticking to it!!!! LOL

Rowdy,

Pay no attention to meaningless insult.  Just pay attention to any useful information and forget the rest of it.

I have met Rookie a couple of times and have seen pictures and actually met one male puppy from Rookie bred to a German Showline (Umi).  The combination seemed to produce very nice pups.

Rookie is one of the best looking and has the most solid temperament.  I think that you will be pleased.

Personally, I prefer dogs produced in a smaller environment.  Shepherds need to be with their families.  So, I would go for top quality backyard/home breeders that produce on a small scale.

I heard from Kim that your female is very impressive, substantial and has a great temperament.

I sure hope to see pictures of the puppies.

Michele
