Wow,
Thanks so much everyone!

I just signed on and saw all the responses-couldn't wait to hear what you would do!!

Thanks for the compliment Red Sable-Kaiser really is as sweet as he looks ( unless I am driving in my car lol but am working on that )!

I LOVE The spider thing OMG..... true so true!!

Angusmom
Thanks I feel I did the right thing now too-I could have tried to help her but as you said she was over the top already-I guess I can liken it to trying to calm my dog after he has already erupted into hysterics over the "road villain's'!

KC what is TDI?

Thanks,
Katrina

I just remembered what my DH said when he returned from walking that stray lab to his home. A woman who daily walks past our home with her cocker, told him, "Oh you're the house with the German Shepherd? WE'RE all afraid of him! "  LOL, But isn't that just one reason we love our GSD's?

Beetree,

Border Collie  is the one they need worry about LOL..

let me rephrase that........
I meant to say MY Border Collie ...she does not trust anyone...until they  prove trustworthy-hey, maybe she has more GSD charecteristics than Kaiser my long haired silly boy lol

It isn't "stupid" we don't know as dog owners that maybe the person had a bad experience at teh hands of a pitbull or Shepherd or any dog for that matter. We cannot be judgemental of people who are afraid of dogs, it is their right.  I had a neighbor once that was terrified of my Shepherds. She had a very bad experince with a Sheherd when she was little. This is human nature, not stupidity.....If I was electrocuted by an wire, I wouldn't grab it again...

Lady in the house behind ours acts like that....the minute she sees me out with the dog/s she herds all her kids into the house; despite the fact that my dogs have never left my property, while her dogs come into our yard & crap, & even come over & growl at us, & try to not let us leave our own porch! I've seen her dogs (chow mixes) bite & knock over her kids, so I guess I understand why she's afraid, but I hate my dogs being villified like that. What was that you say, Rezcat? Can't fix stupid? jh

YOU CAN'T FIX STUPID!!

When people have reactions to dogs like that there's usually no  talking to them.  The only dog I had that would bite someone was my 6lb Chihuahua... the Shepherds NEVER... (Unless asked of course)

Kalibeck you so right, you can't fix stupid, when I am afraid of something I am smart as to seek help to get over being afraid. In this day and age you do not need to transfer your  feelings to the kids. Just because I had a bad experience does not mean I want others to go thru it over and over again, that does not make sense. When I was in grade school we had air raid drills, for years I would duck and cover everytime I would here a siren. I meet my doubts head on now, I am a very tough old lady.
One lady asked does Sabin like children, I said he thinks they are delicious, eats them for breakfast every morning. :)
Always,
Cee

Why is it stupid??  Do you have no fears?  Would you feel safe walking through the park with 3 pits behind you?

A friend of mine has two Pit Bulls (which by the way are two of the nicest and most well-behaved dogs I've ever met) and she watched my dog for a day. She took my dog to Petco and was a little upset when she brought my dog back. "Now I know what it's like to have a "dog" and not a Pit Bull. Every single person we passed at Petco wanted to pet your dog. No one ever asks to pet my dogs, they usually turn around and walk away as fast as they can."

I have had that same experience though. Even though my dog is about the most un-intimidating GSD I could imagine... small, friendly, well-trained...this dog wouldn't take a hamburger when a little girl offered it until she put it down on the ground.... I have had people cross the street or turn around and walk the other direction when they see me walking my dog...like she's a 60 pound spider! I did have one teenage boy scream...he came around a corner and must not have realized we were there. He made the comment that the dog was looking at him like he "was meat".  She of course was just observing him closely since he had screamed at her.

I'm never sure how to react to people when I'm out with my dog. In the past I would always have her heel and walk on the opposite side of me as people approaching. I just assume no one wants to be near my dog unless they ask to pet her. But I've noticed lately that when I don't make the dog heel, people assume she's friendly, whereas if I call her to heel when someone is approaching, they assume she is aggressive.

GSDKatrina, this woman obviously had an irrational fear if she was so frightened and didn't see the dog completely ignoring her and her children, just sniffing, even though she was making a scene. She probably would have a heart attack if you had continued to walk past her. Maybe if she just sees your dog from far away at first, in small doses, and she sees that nothing bad ever happens, you can gradually desensitize her!
