Like I said before, I think it's important that we remember the past. Humans used to be much much worse to each other... In feudal Europe (white-on-white), in the pre-Colombian Americas ("indian"on-"indian"), etc. I think we are getting better as a society. Feeling sadness/remorse for past atrocities helps us become more advanced, more compassionate, IMHO.

Red Sable, have you ever visited a reservation? If not, you have no idea the sort of conditions most Native Americans live under. Here in the Canadian north, many reserves don't even have street lights, or safe drinking water. To throw someone raised under conditions like that into a large city, and expect them to adapt, and be a sucess is wishful thinking.
As for 'free' education, I just saw the story of the black boxer, Hurricane Carter aired on T.V. the other night. He was jailed for 20 years for a shooting he never committed. He was charged simply because he was in the area the night the shooting happened, and he was black, and had a rap sheet. The young boy, Lesra, who helped prove his innocence was (IIRC) in Grade 6 in school, and could niether read nor write when a Canadian couple took him under their wing, and took him home to Canada.
He now has a Master's degree, and is practising law in Vancouver.
That's not saying the American education system sucks, just that there is a HUGE difference between a school in a ghetto, or other impoverished area like a reservation, and a school in a wealthier area.

racism is alive and well and all white people - inlcuding us mutts - need to own the problem because we inherited it. it is the only way to really change things. instead of just brushing it under the rug passing it off as 'a thing of the past' or "not my problem" does nothing to lessen the racism. it's just like pollution - it doesn't matter who dumped the toxic waste we all are left to clean up the mess.
once we each own our own part and then take on a bit more then we can hope to actually 'walk our talk' and diminish racism for real. bottom line deal with it and stop acting like you are above, because the truth is none of us are. it is a dirty messy truth and the more you deny your own personal issues surrounding racism, no matter how small you might believe them to be, the longer it will take us to move past it.

vonissk .. that was NOT the truth about Wounded Knee. That was a down right mockery of the truth.
It's no wonder why Two Elk wasn't aired in the broadcast.

I am proud of who I am.... as an individual.
I know my own heart and trust my spirit to be true.
I also just deleted my lengthy response because its not worth the effort to argue my beliefs about my original post.
Man is no different than he has ever been, perhaps I'm ashamed of the human race.
I learned a long time ago race has nothing to do with whats in a mans heart.
Genocide, slavery, war, and racism still exist, and who is it that rules most of the world today?
He who takes without asking.

You can disagree over details, but history speaks volumes and cannot be denied.
