We have 5 dogs in our home right now and a human family. My dogs DO NOT need to interact, or think it's acceptable to interact, with strange dogs. I say this to my clients over and over and over: Teaching your dog it is alright to "say hi" to every strange dog you meet means your dog WILL do it to the wrong dog one day!!
I was walking one of my dogs through the local PetStoopid when a dog came around the corner without its owner (on a retractable, what else?). The lady caught up with dog and asked if they could say hi. I replied politely, "I'm sorry, she's in training and she isn't permitted". She looked at me as if I was the worst dog owner to ever walk the face of the earth, and proceeded to to go complain about it to the rest of the gathering obedience class (as if you can call what they do there obedience).
And I have dozens of stories just like it. The world abounds with stupidity in regards to dogs, so you just have to ask yourself: Do I really care what these people think? Debi, totally true about neighbor dogs not knowing a command to save their life. You know how often I get asked if my dogs are police dogs? Because they are GSDs and they know how to HEEL?? Seriously?!

Hello Rexy,
Glad to hear that you recognised the potential big problem early enough, and have been addressing the situation since. It is frustrating when some people work hard to have well behaved, controllable dogs, only to find that they also need to handle and control other people's dogs who do not listen to their Owners!
Keep up your good work with your boy.
Regards,
Vixen

Hello KC,
Although Dog Owners and their dogs appear to have the same thing in common - Dog Ownership - that is as far as it goes! Some of us may as well come from different planets, because our outlook is entirely different.
I now aim to always be polite and courteous, so that the other person has no reason to discount myself as a Dog Owner, and therefore hopefully be more aware of my dogs well-balanced behaviour and perhaps even have a good influence on better control.
All we can do is continue to bring out the best in our dogs and our relationship with them. No one could argue with that.
Regards,
Vixen
