Not talking about Panda or white genes here - talking about two black/red parents producing a sable puppy.  It is very simple, and yes 100% fact - two black/tan parents cannot produce a sable puppy.  Never.  Ever.  Won't happen.  Can't.  Is not possible.  Either one of the parents is "not" - or one of the parents is actually a patterned sable that appears black/tan.

Two black/tan parents cannot produce a sable puppy, but BLUE

I used the panda mutation as an EXAMPLE  that mutations do happen. There is no way that you cannot tell me that you can breed blk/tan parents untill the end of time that a mutation somewhere along the line won't happen. Odds are just the opposite that it will happen.  Breeding is NOT AN EXACT SCIENCE, NEVER HAS NEVER WILL. YOU ARE WRONG!  If this was the case we could breed out hip dysplasia 100% (again another example). This is what I hate about this site. You have a a couple of so called "experts" telling everybody else what they are doing wrong. And to answer the question one more time. Yes the odds are that the one of the parents is a patterned sable. Unless a dna test is performed I can not nor any COMPETENT person know  for 100%. Oh wait let's check the chart! Give me a break, the chart is a great tool but is not 100% accurate, maybe 99.9% but not 100%. They even tell you that becuase there is no way you can chart all the variables i.e mutations, dormant genes. Just because something has not happened does not mean it cannot happen. That is just stupid. Unlike others I have an open mind.

Ahhhh, but sable is not a "mutation."

And you need not be an "expert." I belive simple Mendelian genetics is taught in middle school.

Oh, Please!  Is this really being debated here?   Grqtwnbaxley,

Please explain your website.  I went to the link attached to your screen name, and unless I misread, you are actually claiming to have  Grief Lanhtal, among others, at your kennel?   Now, maybe I am missing something, but you have  VA dogs from Arminius and Wienerau on the premises, along with Greif?   Am I reading this correctly?

This is your super opportunity to own TOP QUALITY German Shepherds at a fraction of a normal price. Click on these other links and see what other Champion Lines we have at our kennel.

This will be my last post. Yes those LINES are in my dogs in my kennels. Wonderful aren't they?  These are LINKS showing the VARIOUS LINES in my dogs. Are you an idiot or what?  I never did say that I had these dogs as they are all dead. You also forgot to post Uran Wildsteiger Land as well. That line is also in my dogs' pedigrees and I have a link to it as well. These links are posted to give the customer a look into my dogs' history as with most kennel owners they are proud of their lines.  You MORON I have my sire's pedigree link Right under his picture. I have pedigrees to back all the lines up and am in the process of transferring them to the pedigree database for each dog (as this takes a lot of time and effort). Thanks for the free advertisement and I am checking YOU OUT AS  WELL!

It can't happen , one of the parents has to be a sable Molly is right.. grgtwnbaxly mybe your the one with the close mind you would think for someone that has been breeding for thrity years should know this.By the looks of your website and dogs it look like you just started breeding dogs and really needs some help at it.

Mystere, don't forget you are trying to debate a "breeder" with 30 years experience breeding off color GSD. I'm sure he/she is quite the authority on GSDs. This kind of "experience" puts him far ahead of simple things like the study of genetics, dominant/recessive genes or any sort of scientific research that may be quoted.
