Changer

by Changer on 08 March 2009 - 00:03

There's no reason a good shepherd wouldn't be capable of competing in french ring. Excelling? Maybe not.
French Malinois were bred for the control work that ring entails just like I understand the german shepherd is being bred for the sport of Schtuzund. As far as the Palisade goes, the dog does not have to do it till Ring 2, and even then you can skip it and take the point loss. Sending a 90 pound dog over the Palisade over and over is probably not going to be good for his shoulders in the long run.  That's why we keep those mals at 65 and under!!!! So they retain some athletic ability past the age of 6 years old.

Changer, will you please tell my 97lb GSD that it's not a good idea for him to do that over and over? He simply won't listen to me!

Jenni78 aren't you affiliated with scoutk9.com? If so, thats why I asked for the new site because that one doesn't work anymore. Yeah, if you are who i think you are you had 1 blk gsd at the time and he is absolutely gorgeous!!!!!!

French Ring is a Malinois territory, no question about it. Are some GSDs capable of it? Yes, sure... SOME are quite capable of it and SOME have competed successfuly in it, but overall, Schutzhund is GSD turf, and Rings are Malinois turf. There ya go.

RDH, Scout K9 was a site my friend and I put up. I better clarify that he's my BEST friend, before he reads this and gets all pissy.  Anyway, we took it down when we no longer lived anywhere near each other. The black GSD on the site was Caleb, who is mine. I think I also had some puppy pics of Qira, my female, as well, but you must be talking about Caleb. We weren't planning on putting up a new site, but that may change in the future. Scout is on here as Scoutk9GSDs. People have thought that ID was me as well, but it's not, although we certainly sound alike sometimes! Thanks for the compliment on Caleb. I added to his gallery if you want to check it out. Caleb von Schraderhaus is his name.

Yes Gsd's can do ring. I hate it when people are so quick to say a breed can or cannot do something. IT is about the individual dog.

With that said, you probably  won't be seeing any GSD's beating the Mals @ ring 2 or higher in major events anytime soon.

If I have my way, Ruger's Guru will be getting his Ring 1 by the end of this year. It is not out of the question.

GSD breeders would be doing there breed a favor if they participated in ring more to help evaluate and breed for better structure (working structure that is)

Jenni78 yeah I seen that user name and thought that was him but didn't want to ask..lol. Anyway where are you located now? Is he still available for training?

Yeah guys I agree that the malinois will always excel in ring. I was told they are very nervy dogs! Any how I would like to give it a shot in the near future with a gsd. It disappoints me that protection trainers in general don't think gsd do that well vs the malinois and dutchie. Well at least in my area everyone favors those 2 breeds as better workers for sport and protection than gsd.

The funny thing is Jenni...i was looking for your site because two moons was looking for a male stud dog. I remember your dog because he was stunning and your local (driving distance). I think you guys should work something out because those puppies would be beautiful. Your dog has a very nice large expressive head. I have to say that is the best black gsd i have ever seen and im not a fan of black!

RDH, LOL. I think he's the best looking black GSD, too, but he's mine, so my opinion doesn't count. Moons doesn't like big heads on GSDs, anyway. I don't know that I would stud Caleb out publicly. He's sort of an acquired taste, personality-wise, and I'd rather control/interview/interrogate anyone looking to get a pup from him so I know they would keep it for life, and not get fed up w/the attitude and sell them at 18mos, like I was tempted to do w/their dad, LOL!

PM me and I'll give you Scout's email, or give me yours and I'll have him email you. Where are you located? Driving distance to Chicago or Oklahoma?
