I used to train the articles always off the track first so the dog would have some idea what to do when he came across them. Now, I have gotten lazy with the last two and just started imprinting the article on the track itself. Creates more stress that way I think, but articles normally do at some point. I like lots of food jackpots at the articles though one dog I rewarded with his ball because it took his mind off the track., and because he liked it much better than food. (I had obviously created too much stress on the track itself for this dog) I like the dog to think of tracking as hunting to find the articles so it is very valid what association you first make with the articles.

Your deeply in conflict Changer. Find a mentor to lead you out of this darkness.

Yup. That post was made almost a year ago and I regretted not teaching the articles off the track with positive motivation. So, went back, taught them off the track without conflict, and took a long time to repair the damage I made by being lazy.  Now he wags his tail when he finds them and downs fast and without avoidance.
We are all probably in conflict. I have many mentors, don't we all?

Changer. I have tried many ways with articles. I guess I am lazy too because this approach has been the quickest way with the best results. I do not like a waggy tail on a dog that is tracking. He is not working hard enough. To each his own. Good luck in your training.

I agree with you on the not liking a waggy tail on a tracking dog. Usually he is not concentrating hard enough. But, a nice wag on his previously slow to down articles is what I will take now. Considering he's finding pennies, paper clips, and whatever other junk I can pull out of my pockets, I'd say he's finally got the message.
Good luck in your training.
