A forum like this is always interesting and in summary I get the right information. I was surprised to know that some people let their bitch whelp in a dog house outdoor in even relatively mild winter,. Then on the other hand, I had been too concerned about heating the whelping box, I come to realize.

I am worried about high voltage, that is why I go all the way to use 24VDC on heating elements that is intended for 120 VAC. I happen to have a large number (over 20) of small identical adapters so I gang them up to produce enough power, but a low voltage source can be had as a power source to outdoor lighting. I believe that are 24VDC, if not one can use two 12 VDC in series.

For the same heating element designed for 120 VAC, 24 VDC produces only about 5% of the wattage as compared to 120V. 1000 watt on 120VAC will give about 50 watt on 24 VDC.

I will spot heat close to mom and let the pups crawl around to suit themselves.

I purchased one of these and also a whelping box from the same place.  It is awesome, keeps the pups warm and has a thermometer to check the temp right on the base.
