>>But just in the German Shepherd's I can train any of mine to do anything that a police dog can do....I have had them so timid they would pee on them self, But with love and patient's and building it's confidences I have trained them to jump from high place's and even to attack
and release. True it would take longer to train one that doe's not already have the confidence it need, <<
Why bother, when you can start with a real dog who will take 1/4 the time to train, and then actually be capable of being genuinely protective?
The timid dog might perform in a manner that imitates a police dog, but it would only be a pretense. Such a dog would not make a real police dog, though it might look like one until the pressure was intense enough to make it break and run. The dog has to have guts to confront a violent human being head on in real life..all the petting and understanding in the world will not build internal fortitude in a nevry cowardly dog.
You can train dogs in Schutzhund with little or no prey drive to a certain level...I guess...but it wouldn't be much fun to me, it would be ten times as hard. Why bother? Veronica

snajper69,
I agree with your last post 100%.
ACV,
A real dog? Police dogs I guess are what you are refering to as well. I have seen many balistic/narc dogs that would not do protection. I have seen some that would bark to control large groups of people, but wouldn't do protection. Now are these real dogs to you? To me they are because they are doing what they were train to do.
Why bother? When you take a dog that everyone says can't do the sport and you work with that dog and it does do it. Just knowing that I'm not the one that gave up is the joy I get. Not the part of everyone seeing what you did.
I don't remember anyone talking about nevry cowardly dog, without prey drive was the OP talking about.

Moondust and Held,
Yep, I did buy my dog with his titles, BUT work and training must also be done to maintain him and keep him trial ready! I actually compete my dog, he was not purchased for a companion or breeding alone! I have worked my dog, trialed my dog, made mistakes and fixed them with my dog and I have extensively studied his pedigree....I KNOW what my dog brings to the table! He has had 1 litter in his life time and that is with the co-owners female and none of mine! Therefore, I believe I DO train my dog! Even the greatest dog trainers in the United States buy titled dogs and continue their training in order to compete the dog! Erri was a titled dog before Mike got him, Verdi was a titled dog before Dean got him, Joker was a titled dog before Mark got him, Basko was a titled dog before Manuel got him.......................the list goes on! Big whoop! But, Held is correct ANY tom, dick and harry can buy and breed titled dog.....I don't think I fit that mold!
Besides, this thread isn't about me it is about dogs with little to no prey drive. I just stated that I have seen a malinois at our club trained in the bark and hold and blind search with a clicker!
I went to high school with a girl and her dads name was Harry Dick.....now, that is funny!

JK-- Let me re-copy the quote that says a nervy cowardly dog: >>>>I have had them so timid they would pee on them self,<<< equals= Nervy cowardly dog.
Again: >>> I can train any of mine to do anything that a police dog can do....I have had them so timid they would pee on them self.....But with love and patient's and building it's confidences I have trained them to jump from high place's and even to attack and release. <<< In that context, one thinks of a street patrol dog, not a narcotics dog.
I don't think the above description would be suitable for a narcotics dog either. There are other people who read this who actually train narcotics and police dogs...they should answer instead of me, I do not pretend to train in narcotics. But even in club training, which I am involved in, even novices can see how a nervy dog cannot stand up well to real pressure. A police dog stands up to real life attack.
John says: "Why bother? When you take a dog that everyone says can't do the sport and you work with that dog and it does do it. Just knowing that I'm not the one that gave up is the joy I get. Not the part of everyone seeing what you did."
You are very blessed with a supportive, patient helper and supportive, patient club members if they helped you train your dog to a Schutzhund or PSA title despite the fact he has no prey drive. In this case, not only did your club members see what you did, your club members helped you do what you did. From a SchH Club standpoint, I would think that it would take two or three times as much work to get the no-prey drive dog to work, when everyone else wants to work their dog too. The helper will put in twice as much effort to get that dog into defense just to get a bite on the sleeve.
To repeat my answer.....I don't think it would be fun train a dog with no prey drive. For Me. I won't bother. Good for you that you want to train a dog that "everyone" says can't do it and get personal satisfaction from that. Just curious, who do you refer to when you say "everyone"?

AKV,
The " why bother " part was in reference to what you were saying. Yes, I agree with you that it is more work for the helper and everyone involved. If there would be more people out there that had more patience, I think more owners and handlers would benefit.
" Nervy part ", I only skimmed down, thought you were refering to me, my apologies on that.
" everyone " That was a generalized statement. Not pointing out anyone.
Yes, it is more fun to work with a dog that has high prey drive, never disagreed on that. I was simply saying that a dog with none or very low prey drive can still do it. Maybe not all dogs like that, but there are a lot that can make it to SchH1.
I didn't take any more time away from the helper, during club days. Everyone got equal amount of time in. Somedays I would come down in the middle of the week. As I am very thankful for the that time as well. It was a lot of work, more work, on my part ,away from the club/field as well.
Police dogs serves us just as the men and women in uniform do. I am not knocking them down. I just don't think that you or anyone can say police dogs are real just because they can do protection. Yes, I believe some narc dogs can do protection as well as others not trained to do so because they are in the schools. The dogs that do narc/balistic, ARE REAL dogs to me. Because they are protecting are lives. ANY DOG THAT DOES WHAT IT IS TRAINED TO DO, IS A REAL DOG TO ME!

I did not notice the nervy part. Nervy no way for me. There is enough dogs with bad nerves I wouldn't bother with nervy dog. With nervy dogs there is always accident waiting to happen.
