Two Moons

by Two Moons on 30 October 2008 - 15:10

Steve1,

You must be talking about old, poor quality straw.   Clean (bright) straw does none of the above.

Did you ever try crushed corn cob in the loft?

If you buy straw at a pet store you will pay three time's what it's worth.    Try a (co-op) feed store or a wheat farmer.   Like I said it depend's on where you live.

Our dog's growing up alway's slept where ever they chose, usually the back porch or a smoke house we had no door on, sometime's under a bush.      I have seen my dog's just ball up in a snow drift as well.

Might be different if they had no fur,  but mine really come to life in cold weather.    They love it !!

I hope we get a good snow this year.

Moon's.

I'll get some woolly jumpers made for my outside Dogs,

How is it that some of you think Dogs need extra Food when the weather turns Cold,

i have been in animals and Birds all my life some near 70 years and never heard that nonsense from anywhere until i read it on here,

A healthy animal will eat its nomal food wether it be Hot weather or Cold, weather

Being that the weather turns colder and feeding it more does not help to keep the animal or bird warmer it in fact overloads the system causing the Blood not to circulate as well as it should and it is the blood circulation which is important most of all in relatiion to the health of the animal,

Its just a Fad on part of the one who is feeding it,

Feed it more than it needs, and the animal puts on weight that is another falacy that it is best to be a little heavier in the colder months

It never pays for anything to be overweight at any part of the year, in fact a little under weifght is preferable, that is anything being fed on a regular basis

a life time of doing something without any problems tells me who is right and who is wrong, But the poster must choose who the or she wishes the best way to go

Well i guess you live in a warmer climate, and your experience is different then mine.  My dogs are very active and work, their dog houses are well insulated with straw,  they get wt taken every 2 weeks to make sure they are at the wt I want them to be, if they need more food they get it.  Experience and knowledge does count for something.

Malchep

I do not know where you live, and if it is in the USA or Canada  then i guess the weather can greatly alter owing to the size of the countries

When i say it can get  Minus 8 Degs Celsius  below freezing in the winter sometimes higher some times lower that would be about 46 Fahrenheit if your country does Fahrenheit, so it is not excatly The Bahamas

The Hard Ground Frosts which cover everything White, and you can change the water then in an hour it is solid ice again

However with these sort of Temperatures the Dogs are Fine 24/7

Funny thing we should be talking about this on here

Last night at the training Club one fellows young Pup 6 months old was well over weight, visablly you could see it and a real good handful of  loose flesh and Fur could be had

I said to him your Pup has put on some weight lately, He said Yes, he had upped the Food allowance as it was much colder with The Nights going on Freezing,

But the Pup was not doing any more work and it had put weight on in two weeks i last saw it,

I said the Pup will not benifit by the extra weight but he said nothing and it was left at that,

As i said everyone to there own way i will stay by what has stood me in good stead for over half a Century, not only for my Dogs but me as well

Steve

Teri

Your querie did make me smile

As i am an Englishman we call Woolly Jumpers (Sheep) its a slang saying for keeping something warm

Like for instance in the Pigeon World we ourselves race Long Distance up to 700 miles

Many even thousands race only to 150 miles

Like a Sprinter in Human terms to Marathon runners once the Sprinter is Raced he needs to be wrapped up to recuperate, so we say in Banter of course nothing nasty meant ,I will get you a few Bales of Cotton wool to wrap them up in to bring them round again
