I seldom use shampoo to bath my GSD, but in the summer I use a garden hose on her often, about twice a week as a part of cooling before exercise. I fast trot my dog about three miles every 72 hours or so.

Make sure water in the hose is cool, not heated by the sun.

i thought that was what their tounges were for?

dogs get bathed as needed.  real rainy and the get covered in mud while working, playing they get hosed and maybe some soap if needed.

in my expierence, a well cared for well fed dog produces all the skin and hair conditioners they need.    only if they get into something really nasty, smelly, or are completly covered in mud/dirt do i use any type of soap.

LOL @ sue.  only the good ones smell nice!   the others smell like you know what!
