Yeah, it's worth the time to see the effects on your dogs and how much they enjoy it!

thank you all,

i am going to look at changing to a higher protein diet and cut the worming down :) the reason i have been worming monthly is the vet advised me that the product i was using wasn't adequate, (panacur 10 %)  and he told me that the advocate did worms fleas ticks mites and some of the less known worms (lung worm) that have recently made an appearance in our area.

i did question my vet about the worming and he said it was he best treatment on the market ....my bad  should have checked it out far more carefully.

thank you all again for all your help and advice

Hi Tigermouse, Burns do a higher protein, Liz was right... 24% I think they called it Active or something.  Do you order yours online?  They delivery within a couple of days and there's no extra charge.

Can you get a grain-free food in Britain?

I never deworm my dogs on a regular basis. Blitz is in excellent weight, very healthy and, at 7  years of age, he has not been dewormed since he was 3 months old.  It's just not necessary and can be harmful.

i order by phone or online.

will 24% protein be enough?

i have been looking at some other foods that have higher levels but i would prefer to stick with burns if at all pos.

Tigermouse, I honestly don't know but it's 6% up on what he's having now, so it should make a difference.

It may be worth contacting Burns, they're pretty helpful & I think they have a Vet "oncall" to help.

Tigermouse,if you are going to stick with burns the highest protien level you will get, as said by Missbeeb,is 24%. Is that enough? it depends how hard you work your dogs really,as i said before input has to equal output.Personally i would feed 18%-24% for normal/average excercise, but 32% for active dogs,or bitches in whelp.I think the source of protien is important, and someone has already said burns food has rice as the biggest percentage,i would be looking for a meat protien to be highest. Blitzen,we do get some grain free foods like,Timberwolf,Orijen,Autarky,Arden Grange do one too,but i do not know how easy they are to get.  I agree with you about the worming,i am also like that with booster shots, after the first one i never get them done again.

I'm not sure when it became a tradition for breeders to routinely deworm dogs. When I worked as a tech we never dispensed dewormers unless there was a positive stool check. I can't recall ever having to deworm an adult dog I raised from a puppy. It seems that adults develop a natural resistance to all but tapeworms and they require an intermediate host and can be seen by the owner.

Since I lost my first GSD to leukemia at 7 1/2, a dog that had routine vacs annually including rabies, I no longer vaccinate every year.  Blitz gets rabies every 3 years as required by law only becasue we take him out of state often. I give him a distemper/parvo every 3 years and he had his last when he was 4 years old. Distemper is seldom seen in this area and healthy adult dogs do not die from parvo, most don't even get it even if they are exposed to that virus. Also, no kennel cough or lyme ever. So far, so good. No vet bills for anything other than neutering, a hip xray, and the rabies vacs.

18% and 24% is inadequate for an active dog. Try Orijen or Innova Evo(42%). Or you could give your dog a homemade diet with minced meat, tripe, liver etc. Try raw......
