Steve1,

I am curious to know do you have a pet food tax?  I seems that often when prices are significantly higher in Europe the reason is a higher tax to pay for whatever social or infrastructure idea the goverment has in place?  Just curious to know if this is the case with thedog food? ~Kari

The only beings eating red meat around here are the DOGS! hehehe! We lowly 2 footers eat chicken! How come I have the time & $$$ to buy & make dog food, but not to buy groceries & cook for people? Sorry state of affairs.......jh

I am no expert on feeding Dogs, Most of what i have read on this forum by some of you guys regards recalls, and bad Firms really got me looking up on the feeding and what goes into the Dog kibble we feed our pals

Really; what is the option if one is feeding Dry Kibble, Firsly you have kibbles which contain a great amount of grains some of these grains not at all benifit to our Dogs,

Plus the fact that the Protein in these kibbles are not of much meat content at all

Then we come to the dreaded fillers and the major one of these is Beet Pulp

Of what value to our Dogs is Beet Pulp

So what now, we come to the very few kibbles like Orijen which are high in Protein, Meat or Fish

But contain no grains, the rest of the food being made up of vegetables and fruit

Plus No Beet Pulp

So which way does an owner go, I contacted Orijen before i started feeding my 'Fred 'on it ,about 14 months of his 20 month life he has been fed Orijen

I was assured that the high protein would not be determentel to him in any way

He has grown steady and Strong, Never a moments worry feeding Orijen, his coat looks and feels fantastic, other members of my clubs ask me how do we keep him looking so well

HIs energy is boundless and he is going on well in his work, if he stays the way he is then i have one well dog

Lukasz , very kindly put some photos of him on the forum for me they are now on page 4 of this forum take another look and note the coat condition it shows up even in a photo

Yes, i have mentioned several times that Belgium is an expensive country to live in, something i had not reckoned on when we moved here

As Larrydee says Orijen 120 Dollars a bag of about 28 lb weight, over here, But to me it is worth every cent because i get no vet bills, and to me the well fair of the Dogs is paramount even if i have to lose out myself on occasions

I have stated before on here, that have never eaten a hot dog, hamburger, of its like in my life time I only eat simple foods meat ,but not huge pieces, Fish when i can afford it but twice a week if i can, and vegetables etc in plenty, but not potatoes very few of those

i keep okay, so i try and feed the Dogs as if they were one of us humans as is right, anything else is not for me

we feed raw diet now but years ago I received a promo cd about royal canin #24 the food is different from large breed formula in 2 ways the first is the shape of the kibble it is made to be chunky and more dificult to gulp down also the ingredients (beet pulp I think) is in their to help with digestion they suggest this is something that GSD's need to combat bloat problems the 2nd advantage stated was the formula also had ingredients to deter skin and coat problems such as hot spots. the information claimed to have studied GSD's and designed a food special for them based on the unique requirements.  we are using a royal canin hypoallergenic formula from our vet while attempting to identify which ingredients in our usual raw diet my older males health issues are attributed to, it is $$$ but once we get his infection clear (ear & skin) we can single out each type of raw food it is a slow process but also learning alot in the process. I encourage anyone finding the feed expensive to investigate a raw diet alternative, much good input right here on the forum

Very hard to feed a lot of dogs raw in a kennel bedded in wood shavings. They take it out of the dish, roll it in the shavings, and then won't eat it. They can/do pick up spilled kibble, somehow manage to eat it and leave the shavings. I don't have time to take each of 9-12 dogs out of the kennel and wait for it to eat. There just aren't enough hours in the day!

There are a few things wroung with Royal Canin, its hard to know where to start! Apart from the obvious constant price increases on an already expenses feed, the thing that worries me the most is the fact that they have reduced the quality of the feed They used to have their protein as their primary ingredient but have changed it to a cereal??? why...its cheaper They list their protein as poultry..why not chicken/ turkey etc. becuase they cannot gaurantee what one they will get at the right price...there is no consistency or clarity to the most important part of the ingredients They have products that are known to cause upset....pork & soya A big concern is that people trust such a prominent figure in the dog food industry and yet they insist on having terribly high protein levels in the large/giant junior/puppy feed. When protein after a certain age should be reduced in larger breeds to keep growth steady On the issue of corn in feeds corn when used correctly is an excellent form of energy, and once its good quality & GMO free there should be no problems with dogs having corn in their diet....humans have difficulty digesting corn but not dogs I used Royal Canin for years but not anymore My two pence!!!

I have been feeding GS24 to all of my dogs for several years.  I have tried sevral other foods and not all four dogs do well on any one food except GS24.  I have a form from Royal, buy 10 bags get a certificate for a free bag.  So unless with the newest change in formula which I just read about here, I will continue to buy it, but might go searching for another food.

RC is fed here to more than 30 dogs for more than 5 years. It is an excellent food, variety specific with some research to back that up. However, the "proof is in the pudding". There are a few dogs who might do better on another food. Despite the expense, it is no more expensive than many of the other premium brands and has an entire history and research branch that has been involved in canine nutrition and research for more than half a century.

OK well I know I'm just a rookie and to some wet behind the ears but I have done a lot of research on dog food and the best foods I have come up with are Evo, Blue Buff and last but not least the Merrick line they all come highly recommended.
