Don Corleone

by Don Corleone on 08 June 2008 - 17:06

Naya's mother

I had a dog at around the same age begin to do the same thing.  He favored his rear leg and I immediately thought the worst.  I took him to Dr. S and found a boo-boo between the toes that became infected.  Apparently he stepped on something and a little medication was all that was needed.

Everyone I had talked to said Pano etc.   Take her to the LOCAL vet have him/her check the leg out before you gop overboard and drive 70 miles to some "cheap guy" for X-rays.

I wouldn't give her any pain meds because you don't know what's wrong and if you mask the symptoms and she uses the leg it could exacerbate the problem.  I agree with DKiah and if it were my dog I would take her in to the vet first thing - (better safe than sorry).

Sue, if your read her most recent post, she HAS THE DOG CRATED. That would drastically reduce the possibility of the dog exacerbating the problem, don't you think?

Hi Don,

I plan on taking her to Companion Animal, in Linden, although, the other vet, has outstanding references, and reviews. How's your little demon doing?

Anyway, I'm calling tomorrow, to get her in.

I've had Compainion Animal Hospital for years, and they do trust my judgment, so I doubt I will be reprimanded for giving her Rymadel...I don't regret doing it, this morning was the last dose though, as I do want her exhibiting all symtoms before we go into the vet.

Thanks to those of you who actually helped, and thanks to those of you who did exactly what I told you I didn't need...

If it's Pano you wouldn't give pain meds because Pano is self limiting anyway.  If it is an injury and the pain is masked,  there is still a chance of making the injury worse, even with limited time out of crate.  The problem is you can't make a dog understand that even though it feels better, you still don't want it to use the leg even a little, since you don't really know what's wrong with it.

As a matter of course, I try not to give prescription  meds unless specifically prescribed for the problem at hand.   Riamdyl can be a wonderful drug, however; since many dogs have experienced serious side effects, I would have blood work  done, specifically a liver panel, prior to starting it as well as having the blood work monitored during treatment (if extended) to avoid possible long term side effects.

I talked with a friend today, and he said feeding RAW might help. Currently, I feed dry dog food, so he said his dog improved after having RAW.

Anyone else think it might work? I know RAW is better, so I guess this would be the push I need to get me to do it.

If you wish to keep personal opinions about feeding RAW private, feel free to email or PM me.

Please read above link....I have posted this before because Rimadyl killed my dog.  Yes Pfizer paid all vet bills after the Necropsy proved it was the cause.  If I'd have researched it I would have never given it to him and he'd still be here today.

And no he wasn't on it long term and no it did not effect his liver or kidneys as we did the blood work every month.

And to those who will argue that its a wonder drug-you have never lost a dog to it.

I feel I have to post these warnings and maybe a dog can be saved.  I already know of a few that have had the signs my dog had and when I told them about it they stopped and the symptoms of Rimadyl poisoning stopped.

Ok I'm done now...lol
