Much as I would love to take you on with respect to your characterization of the American educational system....I can't. What do you expect, when books on tape are sold IN THE BOOK STORES? Text messaging is going to kill whatever final vestage of spelling ability is left. When I was a kid, we might have used Cliff Notes to tell us all about a book that we failed to read for class. The thing is, though, that one DID need to be literate to use the 'Cliff Notes. Kids today just listen to a book on tape, or watch a video. We are raising a nation of semi-literates.
Frankly, if you think Brittany is/was bad... well, hon, you "aint seen nuthin' "!! I have seen correspondence from dog folks that needed an actual translation, or an empath, to have a clue about what they were trying to convey.

That might have been how you got your education and/or degree if, of course, you have one.
Not all of the "kids" today obtain their education the way you indicate. I have one studying micro-biology and another studing medicine. Neither of them are obtaining their education by listening to a book on tape or watching a video.
You might be rearing a semi-literate. I, and I'm sure many others, are not.

Where were you educated?
I only ask because it appears that you could use an education in both grammer and punctuation yourself judging from your posts above. Perhaps you should take care of that before posting the faults of others?

Here we go again, taking sideswipes at someones child? Fiona, that was uncalled for, and very condescending of you? We all make typos, spelling errors and so on. And my child has manners and respect, far more important than any academic passes or fails. You are bragging about your childrens learning abilities, is that because you are sadly lacking in any?
And by the way, your spellchecker isnt working, its "studying". I rest my case.

>>Then, those who might ridicule you could, at least, develop a modicum of respect for your posted views. However, you give yourself away in every post you make. <<<
It is incorrect to use the transitional words: but, then, however, and, etc. at the beginning of a sentence. LOL. That used to kill my grades in English class.

wanderer ,
I spelled one word incorrectly so shoot me for it will ya? I'd like to know what goes thru your head when you have the strong urge to poke fun at peoples spelling. Do you not have a punch line so you go to the simple insult and that is to make fun of the way someone spells or their grammatical errors?
Yes I know that my grammar isn't the best and yes I also know that my spelling can sometime sucks but unless if you're a prominent English professor with astonishing records, you should really keep your spelling/grammar critique to yourself.

Robin, Britt received an email that had a heart wrenching story of a mother who had to end life support for her infant who had shaken baby syndrome from a babysitter. It had pictures of the poor mother and baby in the hospital room and the child after passing. A horrendous situation and pictures to match.
I know there have been a lot of things people don't agree with as far as she is concerned but I really, truly I don't believe there is a mean bone in her body. So I don't think it was meant in an inappropriate way even though it was inappropriate for this venue.
That is the reason for this thread. The subject line did say it was off topic but didn't warn that it was graphic and intensly distressing.
Britt, I know you didn't mean it the way it was taken but meant it to raise awareness. But it was just too much for most to get blindsided with. I know it was for me.

I was educated in the US - and I did the IB program - could have gone to school anywhere in the world if I liked because I had an Internationa Degree and frankly did well in it....not to mention that 29 page paper highlighting the roots and similarities and differences between Klezmer and Jazz Music.
Now I am not the greatest test taker - but I have no problem reading three-five books a day if I have the time - as it is I take two hours in the evening to read a book from front to back. I have no issues pumping out five page papers in a couple of hours. And I am a recent member of this educational system - only 22 and still in college (though that has more to do with my stunning inability to memorize anything). I remember elementary school and middle and high school because it wasnt that long ago. I also know college.
Our educational system has problems - in my County it was that they didnt prepare us for college real well....but literacy isnt one of them, Personally - I think our educational system is too memorzation based - but then again - I think that also depends on the institution you are a part of. If you force people to write and do research, they tend to learn the material a little better than power-memorizing.
Now laziness - lol - laziness is a much better explanation for people not caring enough to correct their spelling. I know it's mine - as long as I get the point accross the only time I really care about spelling is in more important things like resumees and school papers.
As far as Brittany's post. Darlin' - it's not that we dont care - but the pictures were too much. This board is not the place and if you are going to post images like that, perhaps a graphic images warning would be in order.
