Very bad positioning.  Hip on left side of image is too close to the film (body rotated along axis of the spine), making the socket on the right look too shallow.  Plus as already mentioned, legs are not parallel.  They look like OFA fair to me.

Rezkat, if you want the best rating  you can get on this dog, you should probably do the xray again. If you only want a number, I think this will get you a fair to a good. The right hip could be deeper and a better film with  the knees rotated inwardly could correct that I think. No remodeling, etc.. Certainly normal hips for a 6 years old GSD.

The breed I hated most to xray were Irish Wolfhounds.  We had a IW breeder as a client and it seesm that one of her dogs needed hip xrays every few months. I'm 5 foot and no matter which end I got it was a struggle for me  . Learning how to take hip xrays is a great experience though, taught me a lot.

That's probably the tough part with him.  He's quite the long string bean!  LOL  Will have to redo him at some point....

Here are the xrays I got back yesterday. Image taken from vet light box.  The vet I had look at them has 10 years experience positioning OFA xrays and he said positioning was fine on these.  What do you think about the hips? Worth trying again in 6 months or so?  She just turned 24 months when these were taken.

I'd definitely rexray this dog. The positioning is OK, but not perfect - the legs and pelvis could be straighter and the knees rotated more inwardly. The sockets could be deeper and a better xray could improve that. It sure looks like a normal GSD hip to me. I'd probably use a board certified radiologist or the SV next time.

the positioning is not straight at all.  Knees are not positioned correctly either.  One femur head appears bigger than the other (because it's closer/dog is twisted) - I would be suspect of the left hip formation (right on the picture) - the neck is thickened and the socket appears shallow - but it could be the positioning.  I wouldn't send these in.

Just to confuse the issue I also brought along one of my other bitches OFA xrays . She went Fair and also had prelimed Fair.

To my eyes and the vet these hips are nearly identical BUT one passed and one did not. Go figure! Even they hadn't been marked for id I would not have known who was who.

I definitely am going to do the one that got Mild again in the future with a board certified radiologist.

look at the sockets - the dog who got Fair has deeper sockets.  This is most likely the difference between one dog passing and the other not - otherwise you are right they are similar.  The positioning on the second dog is better (note the knees are straight and not turned out, the dog is positioned straighter)

The 2nd xray is about as good as it can get position-wise. I agree there is little difference in these xrays and better positioning should make the first look like a copy of the second. I sure don't get OFA sometimes, fair on the second but mild HD on the first?

Yes I clearly see now the "Parallelness" (is that a word?!?) when you look at the two leg bones it is clear the first is not perfectly straight whereas the second bitch's are parallel to each other.

That's why I was so worried when my regular vet who does the xrays could not do them. She is pregnant and had to have her partner take the films.

When my regular vet did my 4 others they all got "good" ratings and then the one "fair".

Also the size difference between the two females is about as much as you can get. The one that didn't pass is just over 60 pounds and very small framed. The bitch that did pass is very large framed and 76 pounds.
