Louise is right, Pycnogenol is the most powerful antioxidant I have ever found and I believe everyone should be taking it as a matter of good health - I would go as far to say it turned my life around when nothing else helped back in 1994 - been a believer ever since and have a friend who swears it got rid of his prostate cancer.   I haven't given it to my dogs before but will start maintenance dosing.  Good advice.

My source is by Kaire International - any other high quality ones someone might suggest?

Louise--do you suppose the kelp has some pycnogenol-type anti inflammatory stuff in it as well?

I don't know. I haven't had pano in a dog since 1994. Kelp, is an extremely helpful/healthy food additive. It is included in the Honest Kitchen foods and the coat supplement that I feed.--I believe, primarily as a source of iodine, amino acids, other vitamins/minerals. None of my present generation of dogs has ever had or produced pano.

I first learned of pycnogenol when I began taking it for severe sciatica. I thought, WTH, I'll try it on the dogs. I find that several generations of raw diets elimate most growth related problems. The pups sired by my boys consistently have higher birth weights than the same bitches have had with other studs.

This thread has been great for me.

My guy  has got it AGAIN now on the left. It is very frustrating to watch him go through these bouts. I hadn't heard about pycnogenol until now. Going to get some today !!!!! thanks all for contributing your knowledge it's so helpful to have a place to learn from people who really care and have years of experience with dogs.  Invaluable.

You can also do a search for Holistic pet meds on he internet. Many companies come up and they have sections you can look through, look under dogs and then arthritis. The list of anti inflammatory herbs/minerals is pretty vast. Instead of using one thing and moving on if it doesn't work, I am using several and they bennefit the dogs in more ways than just their bones. Skin and coat are much improved by the same things and allergies can disappear.

Just a little update.

My bitch still being cage bound seems to be less limping on her leg now.

we even have days with no limp at all like today. we just have little walk up and down the road and she seems to be reacting nicely.

can you tell me please if its elbows would it ease off like this or would she have  alimp no matter she was cage rested or not?

also the heat she had around the top of long bone seems to be very cool when i first bring her out of the crate but then after  alittle walk it seems to start getting warmer slowly?

Any ideas, i know we are off to the vets on monday - but you can imagine the amount of questions running through my head at the minute.

thank you again guys - you lot are great on here

I believe it may help if you do a little ice therapy on her leg after a walk if the area feels warm to the touch.  The heat/swelling in the area can be minimized with an icepack wrapped in a towel for 10-20 minutes.  This should reduce the pain she may be feeling also.

Do you feed RAW in their diets?  The RAW I feed has Glucosamine & Chondroitin along with some good vitamins and minerals which, in my opinion, reduces ailments in dogs by giving them a well balanced diet.  Good diet is paramount to a healthy dog, just like people, the better you eat the better you feel.  As 4pack stated there are also good nutrients that can be added to further help and definately Pynogenol should be one of them.

Pycnogenol is different from other herbs & nutrients as it actually facilitates the body's uptake and use of all other nutrients, as one of the most powerful antioxidants, it kills free radicals which affect every aspect of the body.  When adding Pycnogenol to a protocol, it will potentiate Vitamin C making it 50 times more effective and vitamin E 20 times more effective in the body.  Free radically damaged cells are thought by many to be a possible cause of the beginning mutations of cancer and tumor cells.  By reducing these damaged cells throughout the body, all organs and functions of the body become more healthy and are more capable of utilizing other nutrients.

In hopes that the Pano will soon pass and you will find the right products to keep it at bay.

Lorna
